Inspiration

The inspiration for Digi Vet came from the challenges faced by African farmers in accessing timely veterinary care. Many farmers in remote areas lack access to qualified veterinarians, which often leads to preventable livestock deaths and economic losses. Witnessing these struggles, we aimed to create a solution that leverages technology to provide accessible and affordable veterinary assistance.

What it does

Through this journey, we gained a deeper understanding of:

  • The struggles farmers face in remote areas and the importance of designing user-centric solutions.
  • Leveraging AI for healthcare applications and adapting it to low-resource environments.
  • Building scalable, accessible systems using SMS technology.
  • The power of collaboration between developers and subject matter experts, such as veterinarians, to create meaningful solutions.
    ## How we built it
  • User Research:
    • Conducted interviews with farmers to identify their needs and preferred methods of communication.
  • Backend Development:
    • Used Python to build an AI-powered symptom analysis and diagnosis tool.
  • SMS Integration:
    • Integrated Africa’s Talking SMS API to enable two-way communication for farmers without internet access.
  • Language Support:
    • Incorporated Swahili and English support to cater to a wide audience.
  • Testing & Deployment:
    • Tested extensively using real-world scenarios and deployed the solution on a scalable cloud platform.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Data Scarcity:
    • Finding reliable datasets for livestock diseases was challenging. We supplemented this by consulting veterinary professionals.
  2. Language Variability:
    • Developing natural language understanding for Swahili and English took extensive fine-tuning.
  3. Connectivity Issues:
    • Ensuring the system worked seamlessly in areas with poor network coverage required optimizing SMS communication.
  4. Scalability:
    • Designing a system capable of handling high traffic volumes during emergencies required robust infrastructure planning.

Through persistence and innovative problem-solving, we overcame these challenges and created a solution that empowers farmers and enhances livestock health.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully creating an AI-powered veterinary assistant that is accessible via SMS, making it usable even in areas without internet access.
  • Implementing multilingual support (Swahili and English), ensuring inclusivity for diverse user groups.
  • Developing a scalable system capable of handling real-time communication and large-scale usage.
  • Providing a practical solution that has the potential to reduce livestock mortality, improve productivity, and increase farmers' profitability.
  • Partnering with Africa’s Talking to integrate a robust SMS platform for seamless communication.

What's next for Digi-Vet

  1. Expand Language Support:
    • Add more African languages to make the platform accessible to a broader audience.
  2. Introduce Smart Alerts:
    • Notify farmers about disease outbreaks in their region based on data analytics and reports.
  3. Partner with Veterinary Organizations:
    • Collaborate with veterinary clinics and NGOs to offer discounted or free services for critical cases.
