Inspiration
What if the hardest level in a maze game was the one your friend made for you? Dig Runner began with a simple idea: make escaping fun, but make designing the challenge just as exciting.
What it does
Dig Runner is a fast 2D maze game. Your runner moves continuously, and you swipe to turn before it reaches a wall. You can play 12 built-in levels, carve your own maze, and add traps such as speed rails, mud, timed gates, flippers, teleporters, and moving blocks.
The competitive twist is that creators set a prize in in-game coins. Other players pay an entry fee to attempt their maze. A failed run earns the creator the fee; a successful escape wins the challenger the prize.
How we built it
We built the game in Unity with a phone-first, retro-style interface. A grid-based editor lets players dig paths and place items, while a solvability check helps prevent impossible mazes from being saved. Supabase stores player profiles, coins, mazes, and competition results.
Challenges we ran into
Small details had big effects on fairness. We had to refine wall collisions so crashes happened when the runner actually touched a wall, make teleporters preserve the correct entry and exit sides, and account for moving and timed obstacles when checking a maze. Fitting a precise grid and usable controls onto different phone screens was another challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The game now has 12 progressively harder handcrafted levels, a playable maze creator, six distinct obstacles, and a create-and-compete loop. We’re especially proud that building a maze feels like part of the game—not just a level editor.
What we learned
A player-made challenge needs clear rules and trustworthy outcomes. The more freedom creators have, the more carefully the game must check paths, timing, and rewards. We also learned that a one-block-wide corridor can create surprisingly tense decisions when the runner never stops.
What's next for Dig Runner
Next we want to playtest and balance the competitive economy, expand Free Play, polish the art and sound, and make sharing and discovering great player-made mazes even easier.## Inspiration
