Inspiration
Watching loved ones struggle to find reliable, clinical-grade meal plans for chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, IBS) sparked this project. Too many generic tools ignore medical guidelines—we wanted to make evidence-based nutrition therapy accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford a dietitian.
What it does
DietPlan Agent is an AI-powered assistant that creates personalized, condition-specific meal plans aligned with ADA/AHA clinical guidelines. It generates weekly grocery lists, tracks nutrition progress, and integrates with popular health tools—all tailored to users’ medications, allergies, and lifestyle.
How we built it
We combined React for the responsive UI (with smooth animations/transitions) and Node.js for backend logic. AWS hosted the platform, PostgreSQL stored encrypted health data, and we integrated MyFitnessPal/Cronometer APIs for nutrient sync. Clinical nutrition rules were coded into the AI model to ensure medical validity.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing clinical accuracy with user-friendliness was tough—too much medical jargon alienated users, too little risked non-compliance with guidelines. We also faced API sync delays with health tracking tools and had to optimize mobile animations to avoid performance lag.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a tool that aligns with gold-standard clinical guidelines (low-FODMAP for IBS, anti-inflammatory for autoimmunity) while maintaining a seamless, visually appealing user experience. Over 90% of beta users reported easier adherence to dietary goals for their chronic conditions.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of clinical nutrition guidelines and how to translate them into actionable AI logic. We also learned that user-centric design—like multi-step health questionnaires with visual cues—dramatically improves completion rates and plan adherence.
What's next for this project
We’re adding integration with wearable devices (to sync activity data), expanding support for more chronic conditions, and testing a dietitian review feature for premium users. We also plan to optimize budget-friendly meal options and add regional grocery store alignment for EU/US markets.
