Inspiration

Every day, managers control many processes within their teams. Control means a lot of communication within project tasks. Communication in tasks means typing, typing and typing... This process should be optimized and will make managers more efficient and happy! So why not start to dictate the tasks instead of typing them?

What it does

Add-on allows composing the texts using a microphone or keyboard and then adding them to the issue description, inserting them as a comment, etc. And all that can be performed within the Jira issue view!

Clearly formulated task + time-saving = maximum efficiency of the manager's and team's workflow.

How we built it

We conducted an R&D campaign to find the stack of technologies we could use to build the solution. We discovered that Chrome browser has a built-in fast and secure solution to convert voice recorded by a microphone to text. And that solution works for any language.

Challenges we ran into

We've never worked before with Forge, Chrome browser functions, voice recording and speech recognition. Also, we've yet to find any similar application or functionality within the Atlassian ecosystem. Connecting all these technologies and building a solution - was a challenge for us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As soon as we had the first working version of the app, we started to test it and use it in our hackathon task management. And it works as we planned!

What we learned

Great apps can be built fast using a combination of different (sometimes non-connectable) technologies applied to a specific customer pain resolution.

What's next for Dictation for Jira

The next step is to integrate our application deeply into Jira and Confluence. So user experience will be similar to the Google Doc voice typing experience. Dictation should be available right where the user works with a text. Also, we want to avoid a need to play with copy/paste or page refreshing after the text was entered. We have a plan to improve the dictation experience with a "smart auto-punctuation" feature.
