Our Idea and Inspiration

Art expresses our creative ideas. Sparks our imagination. Fosters connections. Art is the language we all speak and bridges the gap between people, cultures, and borders. Between young and old. Between then and now. Between you and me. With a more connected world, also our opportunities to experience art flourish. This is what we cherish. But there are infinite offers to experience art, culture, and all the beauty the world holds - so, how can we grab them? We felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of offers out there.

And this is why we created DICE - a curated collection of some of the best digital experiences currently out there. Our vision is to enable you and everyone around you to immerse yourselves into new worlds. Become part of another culture. Discover the beauty that’s out there. No matter when or where.

What it does

DICE Gallery curates existing digital offers and experiences across the entire bandwidth of cultural institutions. From virtual museum tours, art exhibitions, concerts to live theater performances. This offers users easy access to a broad spectrum of cultural experiences through an appealing website. It's accessible via web and mobile and optimized in performance and usability.

For now it is offered in English to reach the largest target audience possible. But the aim is to create the website in as many languages as possible and make it accessible to everyone around the world.

How we built it

Our team first worked on curating remarkable cultural experiences that can be accessed via digital channels. We reached out to friends and family from across the world to also feed in local offers from different countries. To consolidate all offers, we opened an Airtable. Once the most promising offers were selected and descriptions were harmonized, we started building a website using the static side generator GatsbyJS for best performance and user experience, fetching data directly from Airtable. The entire offer is built open source and accessible to everyone** so that even more great ideas and solution can be sparked out of it.

Challenges we ran into

Most challenging was curating experiences that are offered in different languages from around the world. It also became very challenging to build-up a functioning website within this short time frame, while also creating a (somewhat ;)) appealing pitch video.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of bringing together a team, having come up with a solution to a challenge and having built a MVP which is optimized for mobile and web within less than 48 hours.

What we learned

We learnt how important it is to work closely together with an amazing team - that's not only 4 but over 40.000 people strong! Leveraging all the knowledge, experience and advice from the community was the best experience of this hackathon! Not only #wevsvirus but #weunited!

What's next for DICE Gallery

We want to continue curating experiences and enlarge the offer so that it becomes the #1 go to platform when looking for digital cultural experiences. In the long run we want to focus on featuring many independent artists and offering them a platform to show their art to the world.
