Inspiration
My sister was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 6 and I can attest firsthand that it is a 24/7 disease that requires constant management. My sister must continuously and carefully balance insulin intake against eating, exercise and other activities. We as a family have come together to support her and make sure she doesn’t sleep through a low blood sugar at night. Often when T1D students go off to college, it is the first time they are completely managing their illness on their own. I wanted to help create a support system for this.
What it does
Diaversity is an application that will support high school students living with T1D in Ontario transition from high school to university life by finding roommates that also live with T1D, as well as a step by step module based guide on how to treat on your own so that they can live their best life and have an enriching and safe university experience.
How we built it
I built it using Java Swing with NetBeans.
Challenges we ran into
I ran into many challenges with NetBeans, as it is a very finnicky program, and making things look good was probably the biggest challenge. The coding part was simple, but trying to make something look pretty inside a java platform is a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am so proud of the roommates tab. I think that being able to find other roommates with type 1 diabetes is such a great thing to have, and it is something that I would want my sister to have once she graduates and goes to University.
What we learned
I learned a lot more about how little supports are available in University. It is truly a jarring statistic.
What's next for Diavesity
Creating more support for our students!
