Diary Threads

Inspiration

Many journaling tools make everyday recording feel too formal while social feeds make it easy to post by adding an audience. Diary Threads keeps the lightweight rhythm of a feed while making the timeline private and useful over time.

What it does

Diary Threads is a local-first diary for iPhone iPad and Mac. People can write short entries attach photos video voice recordings or to-dos and reply to or quote older entries. Search Calendar Analytics Favorites share posters widgets and a rediscovery feed help turn scattered moments into a personal archive.

Real-world application

The project is designed for anyone who wants to record small moments without the pressure of writing a perfect diary entry. Short posts lower the activation energy while threads let longer stories grow naturally. It works for daily reflection project logs travel memories and ordinary life.

How we built it

Built with Swift 6 SwiftUI SwiftData PhotoKit AVFAudio WidgetKit App Intents StoreKit 2 CloudKit with CKSyncEngine and LocalAuthentication. The local SwiftData store remains the offline source of truth with optional private iCloud sync for Premium users.

Technical challenges

The hard part was making a simple entry dependable across replies quotes drafts media offline edits exports widgets and sync. We modeled resource ownership explicit deletion account changes and cancellable derived work so the app stays responsive as the archive grows.

What we learned

Good product design can come from removing pressure. A private timeline with small composable records can feel easier to maintain than a blank page while search and rediscovery make the resulting archive valuable.

What is next

We are continuing to improve real-device validation accessibility cross-device sync evidence and the demo experience while keeping the local-first privacy boundary intact.
