Inspiration:

Despite years of studying English, many learners primarily acquire academic English within educational environments. This often leaves them struggling to fluently use everyday English across various real-life situations, unfamiliar with the specific vocabulary related to different topics.

What It Does:

DialogCraft is an app designed to bridge this gap by allowing users to immerse themselves in diverse scenarios, such as ordering in a restaurant or shopping for clothes. Upon entering their responses, the app automatically corrects grammatical errors and suggests two more authentic expressions, thereby enhancing users' ability to engage in English dialogues pertinent to daily activities.

How We Built It:

Our project, built upon the ChatRPG framework, underwent significant modifications to meet our unique goal: transforming traditional English language learning into a dynamic, practical experience. This evolution from ChatRPG's original design was driven by the desire to transcend the limitations of conventional educational apps, focusing on real-world usability and engagement.

To this end, we implemented a series of enhancements that distinguish our application from its predecessor. Firstly, we expanded the interaction model beyond the original ChatRPG's limited choice-based input (options A, B, C). Our app introduces an innovative dialogue system that accepts freeform text, enabling users to engage in conversations that closely mimic real-life exchanges. This approach not only provides a platform for more fluid and natural communication but also significantly enriches the user's learning experience by exposing them to a broader spectrum of language usage in various contexts.

Furthermore, our development efforts included the integration of advanced language processing features. These features are designed to analyse user input in real-time, offering grammatical corrections and suggesting more authentic expressions. This functionality represents a leap forward in language learning technology, offering users immediate feedback on their English usage and presenting alternatives that are not only correct but also resonate with native speaker preferences.

Through these strategic enhancements, our project redefines the boundaries of language learning apps. By combining the engaging elements of RPG games with sophisticated language learning tools, we have created an application that supports users in exploring and mastering the English language in a way that is both enjoyable and highly effective.

Challenges We Ran Into:

A significant hurdle was the original ChatPRG's process of generating summaries before producing images, which sometimes failed to read information correctly, thereby affecting image creation. To overcome this, we introduced an alternative pathway: generating images directly from the topic when the summary fails. For instance, if the topic is "at a Christmas party," the app generates Christmas-related images. Additionally, we encountered frequent issues with AI misunderstanding our prompts, requiring extensive debugging. Ultimately, by incorporating examples into our prompts and consulting relevant literature, we managed to streamline the process.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of:

We are particularly proud of incorporating grammar correction and authentic expression recommendations into DialogCraft. The project stands out by employing a task-based language learning approach, enabling users to improve their everyday English communication skills from a practical standpoint.

What We Learned:

The development of DialogCraft has been a captivating journey into the potential of AI innovation in education. We've learned the importance of clear, illustrative prompts in guiding AI responses, a challenge that required us to debug and refine our approach continuously.

What's Next for DialogCraft:

Looking forward, we aim to make DialogCraft conversations more concise and the AI's dialogue more colloquial. This evolution will further enhance the app's usability, making it an even more effective tool for learners seeking to master everyday English through engaging, realistic scenarios.
