About the Project

In many cities, getting food or groceries delivered is becoming normal. But in Dhangadhi, Nepal, local businesses still largely depend on phone calls, social media messages, and traditional walk-in customers.

We saw an opportunity to change that.

Dhangadhi Dash is a local commerce and delivery platform designed to connect customers with restaurants, grocery stores, and local retailers through a single digital platform.

Our vision is simple:

Make local commerce as convenient as ordering anything online—while helping local businesses grow digitally.

Inspiration

The idea came from observing how people in Dhangadhi interact with local businesses.

Customers often have to contact multiple shops individually, ask about product availability, negotiate delivery, and arrange transportation. At the same time, small businesses that want to offer online ordering often don't have the technology, infrastructure, or resources to build their own systems.

Instead of building another platform designed primarily for large cities, we wanted to build something for our city, its businesses, and its customers.

That became Dhangadhi Dash.

What We Built

Dhangadhi Dash brings multiple parts of local commerce into one ecosystem:

🍔 Food Delivery — discover restaurants, browse menus, and place orders. 🛒 Grocery Delivery — order everyday essentials from local stores. 🏪 Local Shopping — give customers access to products from local retailers. 👨‍💼 Merchant Dashboard — businesses can manage products, inventory, and orders. 🛵 Rider Dashboard — riders can receive, accept, and manage delivery orders. 📊 Admin Platform — centralized management of merchants, riders, orders, pricing, and operations. 🔐 Role-Based Authentication — separate experiences and permissions for customers, merchants, riders, and administrators. 📍 Order Tracking & Delivery Management — designed to make the delivery process transparent and manageable. 🤖 AI-Ready Architecture — designed with room for intelligent recommendations, automation, and operational insights.

The goal isn't simply to deliver food.

The goal is to digitize local commerce.

How We Built It

Dhangadhi Dash was designed as a full-stack platform rather than a single customer-facing application.

The architecture includes:

Frontend: React / Next.js Mobile: Flutter Backend: Node.js Database: PostgreSQL APIs: REST-based service architecture Authentication: Role-based authentication and secure sessions Infrastructure: Self-managed/on-premise infrastructure during development

The system is structured around separate interfaces for customers, merchants, riders, and administrators, allowing each role to access only the functionality relevant to them.

Real-World Validation

One of the biggest lessons from building Dhangadhi Dash was that a project becomes very different once real people start using it.

We moved beyond simply creating a prototype and began testing the concept in the local market.

During an early phase of operation, the platform generated NPR 36,000 in revenue within one week, validating that there was genuine demand for a locally focused delivery and commerce solution.

This experience helped us understand that technology alone isn't enough.

A successful local-commerce platform also needs reliable operations, merchant relationships, rider coordination, customer trust, and sustainable economics.

What We Learned

Building Dhangadhi Dash taught us several things.

Local problems require local solutions

A model that works perfectly in a major international city cannot simply be copied into a smaller Nepali city.

Business practices, delivery distances, customer behavior, payment preferences, and merchant technology adoption are different.

We learned to design around the actual environment, rather than assumptions.

Building the product is only half the challenge

Developing the application was challenging, but operating it introduced completely different problems.

We had to think about:

How merchants manage orders How riders receive deliveries How delivery pricing works How customers communicate with businesses How inventory changes How different user roles interact How to keep the system reliable as usage increases

Feedback changes the product

Early assumptions frequently changed after interacting with real users and businesses.

Instead of treating the first version as final, we continuously improved the product based on feedback and operational experience.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was building a complete ecosystem with limited resources.

We weren't only building a customer application. We were simultaneously designing the infrastructure required for customers, merchants, riders, and administrators.

Other challenges included:

Designing a scalable architecture while keeping development costs low Building reliable order and delivery workflows Managing different permissions and roles Designing interfaces that local businesses could easily understand Coordinating technology with real-world delivery operations Validating the business model in a market where digital commerce is still developing Balancing rapid development with security and reliability

These challenges forced us to think beyond code and understand the entire business and operational system.

What's Next?

Dhangadhi Dash is only the beginning.

We want to expand the platform from a delivery application into a complete digital infrastructure for local commerce.

Our long-term vision is to help local businesses compete in an increasingly digital economy without requiring them to build expensive technology themselves.

Why Dhangadhi Dash?

Large platforms are often designed around large markets.

We wanted to prove that smaller cities deserve great technology too.

Dhangadhi Dash is our attempt to build that technology from the ground up—with local businesses, local customers, and local challenges in mind.

We aren't just building a delivery app.

We're building the digital marketplace for the next generation of local commerce in Nepal.
