Inspiration
Dhan Mitra was inspired by the reality that millions in rural India remain excluded from financial systems due to language barriers, low literacy, and limited connectivity. Seeing farmers, women, and youth struggle with basic banking and government schemes motivated us to build an AI tool that truly understands and serves them.
What it does
Dhan Mitra is a multilingual, voice-first AI companion that helps rural users understand banking, credit, and government schemes through simple, dialect-friendly conversations. It explains financial terms, guides users step-by-step through processes like loans or KCC renewals, and provides verified information sourced from RBI, SEBI, and NABARD. Designed to work even offline, it turns any smartphone into an instant, trustworthy financial advisor for farmers, women, and first-time digital users.
How we built it
We built Dhan Mitra as a voice-first, multilingual AI companion: 1.IndicBERT fine-tuned for dialect understanding 2.RAG architecture to pull accurate info from RBI, SEBI, NABARD 3.A culturally grounded UX where users speak naturally and receive simple, clear guidance
Challenges we ran into
We faced several hurdles: 1.Dialect diversity: Training AI to understand local variations was tougher than expected 2.Offline optimization: Compressing models without losing accuracy took significant effort 3.Trust-building: Ensuring zero hallucination required strict verified-data pipelines 4.User testing: Rural users needed extremely simple, intuitive interaction flows
What we learned
We learned that rural financial literacy isn’t just an educational problem—it's a trust, accessibility, and cultural relevance problem. We explored: 1.How multilingual AI works 2.How on-device models improve privacy & accessibility 3.Why verified government data is crucial for reliability 4.How to design interfaces for dialect-rich communities
What's next for Dhan Mitra
We plan to expand Dhan Mitra into a full-fledged rural financial ecosystem. Upcoming features include: 1.Personalized financial planning for farmers and households 2.AI-powered fraud detection to protect users from scams 3.Interactive learning modules using stories and visuals 4.Integration with microfinance & self-help groups
