Inspiration
India has the world's largest shortage of blood, with all states together battling a huge shortfall of 41 million units and demand outstripping supply by over 400%, says the first of its kind study published in the journal The Lancet. And demand is rising, says the findings. Every day 12,000 people in India die due to the sheer lack of donated blood. Over 40 districts in India don’t have a single blood bank. One reason of this blood shortage might be the lack of responsible attitude from capable donors which comes due to the time taking procedure and risks of careless handling by the hospital staff.
What it does
The solution to this problem is “Dhamni”. Dhamni which means the artery- Blood vessel which carries blood from heart to the body parts. Just as the name suggests Dhamni will supply blood from the heart- the donors to the needed. Dhamni is a blood bank chain which will provide blood collection facilities at your doorstep. The blood will be collected from the potential donor at the comfort of their home and will be supplied on the basis of priority.
How we built it
We took a framework skeleton from W3schools and used to structure our website. After editing around 500 lines of code we get our website's frontend. We used MySQL for backend and stored data in it using PHP.
Challenges we ran into
We started from a template which had many unwanted fields and classes which we identified and removed we added the html code as per the needs of the project and also added changes in the css file. We were collaborating for the first time due to which using git came to us as a challenge. There were several git and github issues that we have to resolve in our systems. One big challenge in editing the css files was to check for the files to keep and those to delete. We also worked on MySQL using PHP. We faced issues in setting up PHP in our systems and getting started with MySQL during the course of work. Implementing online database was really a big task for us to work on.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to bring our vision to life. An idea that will help millions of people came from our systems.
What we learned
We learned tackling real life problems and pushing our limits to get the best out of us and our ideas. We learned how to collaborate and work in a team and despite having lack of practical experience and limited exposure to industrial development we worked and achieved our objective at a satisfactory level.
What's next for Dhamni
Better data security, More data, Automated suggestions to the needy recipients of near by donors, Creating a blood bank chain and extending Dhamni from blood donation to all kind of organ donations.
