Inspiration

A common problem that many youth face recently is addiction to social media and digital devices. We also face this issue, since our go-to option to get a break from work or school is to scroll on social media apps on our phone. As a result of motivation to fix this issue, we decided to design Detoxify which provides users a chance to step away from their screens and work on different activities that the app suggests.

What it does

The app can also be personalized to your goals and your interests guiding you towards a healthy and balanced lifestyle. There are different categories the user can focus on improving from mental health, fitness, all the way to productivity. Inside each category, a user can select different subcategories in which they would like to receive suggestions which include book recommendations, meditation, music, fitness tips, studying methods, arts/crafts, and many more.

How we built it

To build our prototype and sample designs for the screens we used Figma. For the user to navigate through the different options in a loop we coded different functions using Python on V.S. Code. To advance our GUI(graphical user interface), we inserted the module tkinter on V.S. Code.

Challenges we ran into

As much as designing the app was a process that we all enjoyed, there were some challenges we faced. One of which is formatting our code so that the buttons on the GUI would operate in a loop and not override each other. To overcome this challenge, we inserted a test case scenario as an example of how this code is supposed to ideally run. Additionally, navigating Figma was an issue for us since we are all using this platform for the first time because we would like the web application to be as user-friendly as possible.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the output and functionality of the program.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned about different UI/UX platforms that are available to us that we can use for app design. We also learned how to incorporate a GUI into V.S. Code to make the app even more interactive.

What's next for Detoxify

One way in which we can improve the app, Detoxify, is by transforming our back-end Python code into HTML/CSS to make it more compatible with the Figma platform we used for the UI design. We could also add additional features and recommendations to provide more ways users can disconnect from social media. Connecting social media apps to this application to retrieve accurate screen time data can help improve the functionality of Detoxify. Furthermore, we hope to implement an AI functionality that generates recommendations based on user preferences.
