Inspiration
Usually, when you apply for that first internship, companies are primarily looking for experience. But what if you don’t have any? The next best way to stand out is by showcasing personal projects that highlight initiative and technical skills. Now, imagine taking it a step further by developing soft skills through collaborative team projects. Many students, especially commuters and non-traditional students, miss out on these collaborative opportunities. External factors like long commutes or work outside of school often limit their ability to connect with peers or work on real projects until later in their academic journey.
What it does
Devlink bridges the gap caused by diversity and isolation by providing a safe campus-specific environment for collaboration and development between students.
How we built it
We began our development by creating high-fidelity prototypes for how we envisioned our end product using figma. We took these prototypes and developed our idea using Django, HTML, CSS, Python, SQLLite, GitHub, etc
Challenges we ran into
We encountered many challenges throughout the weekend such as fast paced development, design, implementation, and idea pitching. We had to learn how to work as a team to overcome obstacles while focusing on our individual strengths rather than weaknesses.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of all the accomplishments we had throughout this experience. We ended the hackathon with a fully functional finished product by working through obstacles and challenges as a team.
What we learned
We learned the importance of fostering a safe place to develop ideas and learn from each other’s skills focusing on individual strengths rather than weaknesses to propel our team. This experience taught us how to work under pressure as a team and overcome differences. In the time frame of one weekend we learned what it takes to solidify an idea, accept and process feedback, and execute our plan.
What's next for DevLink
We would love to see our idea take flight and let UNCC students implement the software and get feedback. Eventually, we would like to expand to other colleges facing the same issues and bring students together.
