Inspiration
I was inspired by the James Webb Telescope and the aspects of origami engineering the telescope used for its created. I wanted to show how origami is a growing part of the modern tech world in an artistic way.
How we built it
I made the base of the model from an acrylic sheet and used acrylic paint to make the background look like ~space~. I used wooden plating for the back of the model as well the the trunk of the "tree" part of the model". For the top of the "tree" I decided to used a laser-cut image of the origami tessellation pattern from the James Webb telescope, complementing the space-themed background. From the top of the "tree", I had electrical wires running from the tree to origami roses and lotuses, representing the connection between the modern, integrated origami, and traditional paper origami. These origami flowers were hot glued to the base of the model.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of how I was able to actually finish the project by the end of the given period. This was my first hackathon that I was able to participate in, and I am proud that I completed something tangible by the end of it. I'm also proud of how it turned out! I thought it would
What we learned
I learned that making a model takes much more time than planned. Even though I had initial, larger, model in mind, times and resources became important deciding factors in the final appearance of the model. Next time I participate in a times event such as this, I will be more wary of my time and try to tailor my project to the time and resources given.
What's next for Expanding Origami
For the developing tech world, I hope that more forms of art or other origami formations become more integrated into the realm of engineering. Perhaps not just in space, but maybe in industry (packaging, structuring, etc.). In general terms for the universe, I also hope that the James Webb telescope does well, and captures more data and images for NASA, allowing the universe to become less of a mystery each day.
