Inspiration
Inspiration
The inspiration behind Starforge came from a simple problem we noticed: web developers often have great skills and projects, but they don't have one dedicated place to showcase their work, connect with potential clients, and get help from other developers when they face technical problems. At the same time, clients can struggle to find developers whose skills and work they can trust.
We wanted to create something that combines the social and discovery experience of modern social platforms with the professional value of a developer portfolio and the collaborative nature of a developer community. This led to Starforge — a platform where developers can showcase projects, share their work, connect their GitHub, find clients, and, importantly, post the problems they face while building something so other developers can suggest solutions and share their knowledge.
Our goal is to turn Starforge into more than just a place to find developers. We want it to become a community where developers showcase, clients discover, and developers help developers build better.
What it does
What it Does
Starforge is a social and professional platform built specifically for web developers and their clients. Developers can create profiles, showcase projects, publish posts and reels, connect their GitHub repositories, and communicate with clients or other developers through real-time messaging. Developers can also share technical problems they encounter while building websites or applications, allowing other developers to suggest solutions, provide feedback, and collaborate on solving them. Clients can search for developers, explore their profiles, projects, GitHub work, and posts, follow developers, and contact them directly. Starforge also provides developer verification, helping clients identify developers who have been reviewed by the platform's administrator. By bringing developer discovery, portfolios, social networking, collaboration, problem solving, GitHub projects, messaging, and verification into one platform, Starforge creates a dedicated ecosystem where developers can build their reputation, learn from each other, find opportunities, and help clients find the right developer for their projects.
How we built it
How We Built It
We built Starforge as a full-stack web platform focused on creating a real social and collaboration experience for web developers and clients. We used a modern responsive frontend to create an original social-media-style interface for the home feed, developer profiles, search, projects, reels, and messaging. Firebase is used as the backend, including Firebase Authentication for secure account creation and login, Cloud Firestore for storing users, posts, projects, conversations, messages, followers, and verification data, and Firebase Storage for profile pictures, posts, reels, project files, and shared media. Developers can connect their GitHub accounts to showcase their repositories and projects directly on their profiles. We implemented real-time messaging so developers and clients can communicate, share text, images, short videos, and voice messages. We also built a role-based system that separates Developers, Clients, and the Administrator, with Firebase security rules protecting private data and admin features. An AI-powered verification assistant helps the administrator analyze developer information and identify potential risk indicators before the administrator makes the final verification decision. We used AI-assisted development throughout the building process to help design, develop, debug, and improve the platform while focusing on making the core features functional, secure, and scalable.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges We Ran Into
Building Starforge came with several challenges, especially because we wanted to create a real working platform rather than just a visual prototype. One of the biggest challenges was designing a reliable authentication system with email OTP verification, unique usernames, and automatic role detection for developers, clients, and the administrator. Connecting all of the platform's features to Firebase while keeping user data, posts, projects, and messages persistent and secure also required careful planning. Building real-time messaging was another challenge because conversations need to remain available after refreshing, logging out, or returning to the platform later, while still keeping private conversations secure. We also had to work through GitHub integration so developers could connect their repositories and showcase real projects instead of using simulated data. Handling media uploads for posts, reels, images, videos, and voice messages required additional storage and validation. Another challenge was designing the AI verification system responsibly so that it can assist the administrator in identifying potential risks without automatically deciding whether someone is trustworthy. Finally, we had to make sure that new users start with a completely clean account and that no test users, fake conversations, or demo data appear when someone first visits the platform. These challenges helped us focus on making Starforge functional, secure, and scalable rather than simply making it look like a social media application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of
We are proud of building Starforge as more than just a social media concept—we created a platform designed around the real needs of web developers and clients. We successfully brought together developer profiles, project portfolios, GitHub integration, posts, reels, real-time messaging, following, and developer discovery in one platform. We are especially proud of the idea of allowing developers to share technical problems they face while building projects and receive solutions and suggestions from other developers, turning the platform into a collaborative learning community. We also designed a role-based system for developers, clients, and administrators, along with a developer verification process and an AI-assisted verification system to help the administrator identify potential risks. Another accomplishment we are proud of is focusing on real backend functionality with Firebase so that accounts, projects, posts, conversations, and other user data can persist securely instead of relying on temporary demo data. Most importantly, we are proud that Starforge combines showcasing, networking, collaboration, problem-solving, client discovery, and trust into one platform built specifically for the web development community.
What we learned
Building Starforge taught us that creating a real-world platform involves much more than designing an attractive interface. We learned how important it is to plan a reliable backend and manage user authentication, unique usernames, email verification, roles, permissions, and secure data storage. We also learned how real-time technologies can be used to create messaging and collaboration features where information remains available across sessions and devices. Working with GitHub integration taught us how external services can extend a platform and make developer portfolios more useful. We learned the importance of designing proper database structures for users, posts, projects, conversations, followers, and notifications instead of relying on temporary or fake data. We also learned that AI should be used responsibly—for example, our verification assistant can help identify potential risks, but the final decision should remain with a human administrator. Most importantly, we learned how to turn a real problem into a practical product by continuously testing, identifying problems, listening to user needs, and improving the platform based on those challenges.
What's next for DEVELOPER CONNECTS STARFORGE
Our next goal for Developer Connect – Starforge is to grow it from a social platform into a complete ecosystem for developers and clients. We plan to improve the developer discovery system so clients can find developers based on skills, technologies, experience, projects, and availability. We also want to introduce a proper project collaboration and hiring system where clients can post their requirements, developers can submit proposals, and both sides can manage their projects through the platform. We plan to improve the developer problem-solving community with tags, accepted solutions, reputation points, and helpful-developer rankings so that developers can learn from and support each other. We also want to expand GitHub integration, add stronger portfolio tools, reviews and ratings, notifications, advanced search, and mobile applications. In the future, Starforge could also include AI-powered developer recommendations, project matching, code and debugging assistance, scam detection, and personalized learning suggestions. Our long-term vision is to build a trusted global community where developers can showcase, collaborate, learn, solve problems, and find opportunities, while clients can discover, communicate with, and work with the right developers.
How Clients believe the developers
Starforge is designed to help clients make more informed decisions before working with a developer. Developers can build trust through a transparent profile that showcases their real projects, GitHub repositories, skills, portfolio, posts, and activity on the platform. Developers can also receive an orange verification badge after the Starforge administrator reviews their profile, projects, GitHub activity, and other available information. Clients can view a developer's previous work and communicate with them directly before starting a project. The platform can also include reviews, ratings, reports, and a developer reputation system so clients can learn from the experiences of others. An AI-assisted verification tool can help the administrator identify potential scam or suspicious activity, while the final verification decision remains with the administrator. Together, these features create multiple trust signals rather than relying on a single badge, helping clients choose developers with greater confidence.
