Inspiration

Most AI assistants send everything to the cloud: you need a connection, an account, and you pay per message, while your conversations leave your device. We wanted the opposite — an assistant whose brain runs on the phone itself, that keeps working with the internet switched off and keeps your data with you.

What it does

DEVELOP runs an AI model directly on your Android phone. You chat with the Brain even in airplane mode — no account, no subscription, no per-message cost — and your conversations, documents and images never leave the device.

  • On-device Brain (works offline): chat, summarize, translate, rephrase — right on the phone.
  • Your own documents: add .txt/.md files and ask about them on-device; the source is cited.
  • Declared online features: world alerts (USGS, GDACS, NASA FIRMS) and maps — the app says each time when the internet is needed.
  • Sensors on your Wi-Fi: with the DEVELOP hardware kit you connect sensors and cameras on your own network, and can ask the Brain what a connected camera sees.
  • 22 languages, switchable anytime.

How we built it

A native Android app (Kotlin) runs an on-device language model served locally through a Python backend, so the core assistant needs no cloud inference. The interface is a local web app. The optional one-time contribution (a non-consumable purchase) is handled with RevenueCat, including the in-app paywall. Online helpers use only public data sources, and the app states each time when a feature needs the internet.

Challenges we ran into

Running a capable model on-device within a phone's RAM, keeping everything private and offline, and being scrupulously honest in the UI and store listing about what runs locally versus what needs the internet.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

An assistant that genuinely answers with the internet off, an honest store listing, and no hidden cloud calls for the core chat.

What's next

Sensor automations (rules that act on their own) on the phone — today the Brain answers when you ask; it does not watch or alert by itself.
