Inspiration
As a developer, my mornings start with tab-switching chaos — GitHub for PRs, issues tab, commit history, back to Slack. I wanted what Alexa already does for your smart home: one voice command that just tells you what matters. Dev Daily is that, for your codebase.
What it does
Dev Daily is a simulated Alexa+ experience for developers. You open the app, say "Good morning briefing," and it:
- Fetches your live GitHub data — open PRs, assigned issues, recent commits, weekly stats
- Sends it to AWS Bedrock (Claude Haiku 4.5) to generate a natural language summary
- Reads the response aloud via Web Speech API, exactly like an Alexa+ skill would
You can follow up with voice or text: "Any open PRs?", "How was my week?", "Any new issues?" — it maintains conversation context across turns.
How I built it
- Next.js 16 + TypeScript + Tailwind CSS — frontend and API routes
- GitHub REST API — live PR, issue, and event data fetched server-side
- AWS Bedrock (
us.anthropic.claude-haiku-4-5-20251001-v1:0) — natural language briefing generation via AWS SDK v3 - Web Speech API — browser-native voice input (SpeechRecognition) and output (SpeechSynthesis)
- Vercel — zero-config deployment
Challenges
- Bedrock inference profiles vs. on-demand model IDs — the model ID format matters and the error messages aren't obvious
- Web Speech API is Chrome-only and asynchronous; syncing orb animation states (idle / listening / thinking / speaking) with both the recognition and TTS lifecycle needed careful event handling
- GitHub's event API doesn't paginate far back, so weekly stats have a ceiling — works well for active developers
What I learned
How naturally MCP-style agentic patterns map to voice UX — the Alexa+ "simulated experience" path is essentially a multi-turn agent loop with a voice layer on top. AWS Bedrock's inference profiles add flexibility for cross-region routing but add a layer of indirection that could use better documentation.
