Inspiration

Hi! We are a team called Megawasp. We’re grade 11 students from Vancouver. The problem we decided to tackle for the hackathon was helping teenagers deal with their stress. The teenage period is one of the most difficult periods of a person’s life, and we wanted to change that. We think this is a problem for a lot of teenagers that has a simple solution. To find a solution, we identified that one of the major causes was that teenagers have little time off to think and relax. For the hackathon, we created a web app that could be a useful tool for reducing, if not eliminating, stress from their lives. We’re calling it Destresser.

How we built it

We used HTML, CSS, and react to build our app, and Figma and Canva to design it.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest problems we ran into were making the React code work and optimizing CSS for different screen sizes. One issue we encountered was the screen dimension problem. While working on the interface together, the CSS looked different and incorrectly positioned for some of us in the team because we didn’t realize we had huge screen dimension differences. We eventually switched to using the flexbox method and that helped fix a major part of the issue.

By slowly solving each minor problem, we are able to implement all our most important features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re really happy with our app because we manage to finish the project on time and have our design and all the pages, buttons and functionalities working properly, like how we planned initially. We learned more about web development skills and how it is to work in a team and solve problems together.

What's next for Destresser

This idea is relevant these days, as the Internet progresses so as the speed of information we get. Sometimes you just need to leave the marathon, stop, relax and rethink. We see our web app as a mobile companion app, with better accessibility and convenience for users. With a phone app, it can notify the user about planned stretches and relax times. It would be a much easier habit to incorporate into someone’s routine. We are also considering using chatbot mechanics. The users will be able to chat with the bot and tell it about their problems/stresses and the chatbot can give them useful and professional advice that can help them deal with their problems. This is just one feature we think would make this idea a lot better if we work on it more.

Despite the little time we had, we’re still really happy with what we came up with over the weekend and would love to continue this project and make it even better going into the future!
