Inspiration

As students, we've all experienced the frustration of walking into a crowded library and spending several minutes searching for an empty seat. During exam season, this becomes even more stressful, with some seats left unused while others are occupied for hours. We wanted to solve this everyday problem by creating a simple and efficient digital solution that saves time for both students and library staff.

What it does

DeskGuard is a smart library seat allocation system that allows students to:

View seat availability in real time. Reserve a seat before arriving at the library. Manage or cancel their bookings easily. Avoid unnecessary waiting and confusion.

For library administrators, DeskGuard provides a dashboard to monitor seat occupancy, manage reservations, and improve overall space utilization.

How we built it

We started by understanding the real challenges students face in libraries and identifying the key features needed to solve them. We designed an intuitive interface that makes seat booking quick and straightforward while ensuring administrators have complete control over seat management and We used Lovable to accelerate the initial project setup and UI development. We then customized the application, implemented the required features, refined the user experience, and continued developing it throughout the hackathon

The project includes:

Student authentication Real-time seat availability Seat reservation and cancellation Admin dashboard for managing bookings Responsive and user-friendly interface

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was designing a seat allocation system that prevents booking conflicts while keeping the experience simple for users. We also focused on creating an interface that anyone could use without needing instructions.

Since this was developed during a hackathon, managing our time and dividing responsibilities efficiently was another important challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Working on DeskGuard taught us much more than just coding. We learned how to:

Identify a real-world problem and design a practical solution. Work effectively as a team under time constraints. Plan features based on user needs instead of assumptions. Build a project from idea to prototype within a limited timeframe.

What we learned

Building DeskGuard taught us that solving a simple everyday problem can create a meaningful impact. Throughout the project, we improved our skills in frontend development, backend integration, database design, authentication, and responsive UI development.

Beyond technical skills, we learned the importance of teamwork, communication, time management, and prioritizing features during a hackathon. We also gained valuable experience in designing software with the end user in mind.

What's next for DeskGuard -Smart Library seat allocation system

Our vision is to transform DeskGuard into a complete smart library management platform.

Planned features include:

QR code-based check-in and check-out Automatic cancellation for unattended reservations AI-powered seat recommendations based on user preferences Live occupancy heatmaps Mobile notifications and booking reminders Analytics dashboard for library administrators Multi-library and multi-campus support Student waitlist for fully occupied libraries Accessibility features for differently-abled users Mobile application for Android and iOS

Our long-term goal is to help educational institutions manage library spaces more efficiently while providing students with a seamless and stress-free study experience.
