Inspiration
My client wanted to build a home but he had no idea on what designs to look for. Even I had several designs in my collection sending the images one by one was a struggle and painful and the images will get lost afterwards so each new client I have to send again those saved designs.
What it does
DesignMatch revolutionizes the home design discovery process by creating a Tinder-like interface for browsing house designs specifically tailored for the Nepalese market. The app allows clients to: Swipe through curated house designs - Right to save favorites, left to skip Discover designs with intelligent filtering - Filter by architectural style (Modern, Traditional, Luxury, Eco-Friendly), price range (2M-50M+ NPR), bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage Access bilingual content - Full English and Nepali language support for broader accessibility Save and manage favorites - Create accounts to permanently save preferred designs with cloud sync View detailed specifications - See comprehensive details including NBC earthquake compliance, architect information, pricing, and location Share collections easily - Export saved designs via WhatsApp for seamless client communication Experience automatic categorization - Smart AI-powered categorization of designs based on architectural features
How we built it
We developed DesignMatch using a modern, scalable tech stack: Frontend Architecture: React + TypeScript for type-safe, component-based development Vite for lightning-fast development and optimized builds Tailwind CSS for responsive, mobile-first design system Framer Motion for smooth, engaging animations and swipe gestures Backend & Infrastructure: Supabase for authentication, real-time database, and user management Dropbox API integration for dynamic loading of real house design images Zustand for lightweight, efficient state management Progressive Web App capabilities for mobile-native experience
Smart Features:
Automatic image processing from Dropbox storage with intelligent metadata extraction Fallback system using curated Pexels images when custom images aren't available Responsive design optimized for both mobile and desktop experiences Real-time filtering with instant results as users adjust preferences
Challenges we ran into
Mobile network optimization - Ensuring smooth image loading on slower Nepalese mobile networks Bilingual implementation - Creating seamless language switching between English and Nepali with proper typography Dropbox integration complexity - Managing API authentication, refresh tokens, and handling network failures gracefully Cultural design adaptation - Ensuring the swiping interface felt natural for Nepalese users while maintaining familiar UX patterns Price localization - Converting and displaying prices in NPR with appropriate formatting (Lakhs/Crores) Earthquake compliance integration - Incorporating Nepal Building Code (NBC) compliance as a key feature for safety-conscious buyers
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Solved a real problem - Transformed a painful manual process into an engaging, efficient digital experience Created an inclusive platform - Full bilingual support makes home design accessible to both English and Nepali speakers Built for resilience - Robust fallback systems ensure the app works even with poor connectivity or missing configurations Achieved professional quality - Smooth animations, intuitive UX, and mobile-optimized performance rival commercial apps Integrated local requirements - NBC earthquake compliance and NPR pricing show deep understanding of the Nepalese market Enabled scalability - Architects can easily add new designs by simply uploading to Dropbox, with automatic categorization
What we learned
User experience design - The importance of progressive loading and graceful degradation for varying network conditions Cultural localization - How language support goes beyond translation to include appropriate design patterns and user expectations API integration resilience - Building robust error handling and fallback mechanisms for third-party service dependencies Mobile-first development - Optimizing swipe gestures, touch interactions, and visual hierarchy for mobile users Real-world business needs - Understanding the pain points of client communication in the architecture/construction industry Database design - Implementing Row Level Security (RLS) in Supabase for secure, scalable user data management
What's next for DesignMatch
Advanced AI recommendations - Machine learning to suggest designs based on user preferences and swiping patterns Architect collaboration tools - Direct messaging between clients and architects, with design customization requests 3D visualization integration - Adding 3D model previews and virtual walkthroughs for selected designs Cost estimation calculator - Integration with local material costs and labor rates for accurate project budgeting Regional expansion - Expanding beyond Nepal to other South Asian markets with similar architectural needs Augmented Reality features - AR visualization to help clients see how designs would look on their actual plots Construction marketplace - Connecting clients with verified contractors and suppliers for complete project management Portfolio analytics - Advanced insights for architects on design popularity, trends, and client preferences
This platform transforms the traditional, inefficient process of sharing house designs into a modern, engaging experience that benefits both architects and clients while preserving the rich architectural heritage of Nepal.
