Designing Policy Evaluation Tools for the SDGs

About our team We are a team of evaluators, social impact analysts, researchers, and technologists with a deep connection and passion for sport and physical activity. Led by an industry organization, Bingo Impact Management Consulting Inc. link based in Ottawa, Canada, we seek to change the ways in which sport’s contribution to the sustainable development goals is tracked and evaluated.

You might remember some of our team members from the 2020 Global Design Challenge’s second place team, FreeBay link. With an additional year of testing our ideas and adding programmers and developers, we are ready to take on the challenge again in 2021.

How we worked together We came together to iterate on our ideas, occasionally in person as Ontario’s lockdown allowed, but primarily through the online collaboration and communication tool Slack. Instant messages across team members, file sharing, and discussion took place in real time. Capturing ideas and design thinking was facilitated through white board tool Miro.

Our inspiration This is a completely new idea for Bingo Impact Management, first born out of discussion with GDC leaders following the 2020 competition. We worked to further develop these ideas through discussions with programmers, developers, and Bingo’s CEO and CTO. Implementing systems for evaluation is often out of reach in terms of cost, and difficult for sport organizations to conduct on their own due to the expertise required. One of the ways Bingo is able to defray the costs involved – for example, licensing, database costs, server implementation – is through economies of scale. Bingo’s social impact management platform is one way that we leverage technology to make the evaluation process more affordable – however, through this project, we found that there was a way to reduce costs even further my streamlining, applying a data ontology to our data capture, and making a tool that could help any organization track, capture, and evaluate their activities against the sustainable development goals.

What's next for Designing Policy Evaluation Tools for the SDGs This is an early stage idea, and we need partners to help implement, test, and refine our concept. Testing, testing, testing in real-world scenarios, ideally across multiple locations, will be one such way for us to find out how this project can really come to life.
