Describe your project (max 150 words)
MotiMate is an app that facilitates student connections across campus to enhance exercise motivation. The Home Page features a log-in and sign-up , ensuring a seamless start. On the Profile Page, students share fitness survey responses for tailored recommendations. The Match Page pairs users with similar fitness profiles. In the Chat Page, students can introduce themselves, share experiences, and decide on when to meet. The Calendar Page allows for scheduling. The last page shows that you have booked an appointment successfully. MotiMate is a way for students to connect.
Describe your research process and findings. If you conducted any surveys or interviews, please include the survey form and/or interview questions here. If you conducted secondary research by pulling from online sources, please include a link to your sources. (Max 500 words)
To spark our app’s journey, we conducted interviews with three students from Rice University. One male, two females. The objective was to gain insights into their fitness challenges, preferences, and motivations. Based on these 3 objectives, we asked each primarily two questions. One, on days where you feel unmotivated to go to the gym, what are the reasons you put down? Two, what are things that motivate you to go exercise? Although there was some small variability in answers, all of the three participants found that they experienced motivation struggles due to the constant juggling between school, friendships, work, relationships (or a combination of these factors!) which caused them to feel exhausted. Therefore, by the end of the day, they would not want to exercise. With the information, we decided to create a service tool that could keep students motivated and accountable for their goals. Recognizing the importance of social connections, we created Motimate, an app that enables users to find workout partners within their campus. Our interviews with the three Rice University students played a pivotal role in shaping the development of MotiMate. By understanding their challenges and aspirations, the app was tailored to consider the academic and busy lives of students.
Describe your most important design decisions. What research findings and/or user testing results led you to make these decisions? (Max 500 words)
There were many decision we had to make during the process. First, our team wanted to create a Virtual AI component that would allow for users to connect with a live AI representative for 24/7 assistance. However, due to the time constraint, our team decided to remove this plan. Our second decision was in regards to colors and fonts. What colors can we use to ensure visibility to a diverse pool of students, including those with vision impairments? What font sizes can we use to optimize our space? We decided to utilize purple, as it is one of the most common colors that most individuals with vision conditions, such as color blindness, are able to see clearly. We also chose to use larger fonts to ensure clearness in visibility for many. We also wanted to use larger fonts for clarity in our message. 3 hours before submission, we encountered a problem with our calendar page. When previewing, the calendar was moved sideways and me and my teammate did not know what to do. Thus, although crammed up on time, we decided to delete our calendar, and start making a whole new one from scratch again. From this experience, our team learned that design does not always go the way you plan, and one tiny error can make you do things that you never knew you were able to.
