Inspiration

Our team members have had experience researching ways to make online products more accessible to people of various disabilities. We decided to focus on breaking the barrier between deaf students and online curriculums by adding more visual tools that can aide in both learning and communicating with classmates and professors.

What it does

There are two basic functions of this project that address learning both in and out of the lecture period.

The first functionality is an improved web chat interface that displays not only a professor's camera, presentation, and class chat, but also features a separate window that can display live closed captions and sign language interpretation.

The second functionality is that we have created a portal for teachers to upload their recorded lectures and auto-generate a transcript that they can then customize through fixing grammar errors and uploading images, links, and other media that could aide in a student's learning experience.

How we built it

The basic designs were done in figma.

2 Basic wireframes were created for both the web chat and the video upload page. These were then duplicated and refined to show specific functionality of how our product would work.

Challenges we ran into

Personal challenges included lack of available time on our part.

Design challenges we can across included how to fit as much features into the web chat without cluttering the page and creating even more confusion for the students who would have to view it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're personally proud of the upload feature, as one of our members has already created a similar product that can transcribe videos with ease.

What we learned

We learned more about how to create simple products that put the user experience first and foremost. Specifically when researching, we learned that the available tools that should aide deaf students could in fact prove to be a detriment in their online learning experience.

What's next for Design Challenge: Team 7

We hope to continue creating more designs that can benefit the learning and education of all people, regardless of disability.
