Inspiration

We are a diverse group of females and all of us are truly in touch with our cultural side. We enjoy cultural food and enjoy making them even more. We originally bonded over making american desserts together, so we thought why not make our cultural desserts.

What it does

Our website brings culture to the kitchen. Our team wanted to introduce both the desi and arab culture to those who are unfamiliar with the scrumptious desserts they bring to the table. Our goal was to bring different cultures together to be celebrated and enjoyed in a delicious fashion to both those who have and have not heard of these desserts and or cultures, and we feel this mission has been accomplished through our website. It brings everyone together to enjoy a sweet treat and even sweeter experience!

How I built it

We used repl.it to create our website. We thought about using other platforms to create the website, but since one of our team members was familiar with repl.it. So, by using templates, watching videos, and by looking at websites about making websites,

Challenges I ran into

At first, communication was a big issue. It was difficult to find a time where everyone was available because most of us were busy. For example, Mary had religious obligations, Martina wasn’t going to be home for most the weekend, Hooryah had to visit family,and Ritika had to take care of her younger siblings.There wasn’t a time that all of us could be on at the same time. Due to this issue, everyone was doing things on their own. Everyone had to carry their own weight at their own time. However, at the end we were able to overcome this obstacle and were able to produce this project. Another challenge we ran into was figuring out how to code. Only one person in this group knows how to code because she is currently taking AP Computer Science, but this competition was a learning experience for all of us.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We successfully created a website, and knowing that it was our first time, we were proud of the recipes we were able to transfer on the website in order to introduce everyone who visits the website to these cultural dishes.

What I learned

As this was our first time coding, we had to look at videos and templates to create our website. Although it looked easy, it really wasn’t. We’ve always heard that one complicated code could output such a simple word as ”hi,” but now, after actually coding, I know what they mean. When coding, if we made one mistake in the code, all the words and pictures would overlap each other. Then, to solve the issue, we’d have to read each and every line to find the bug in the code. Even though it took long, we learned something new. Other than learning how to code, we learned how to create new recipes. For instance, when Martina added Baklava to the website, Hooryah was intrigued and interested. So, she said that she’d buy all the materials to make the food, and follow the recipe on the website. We always thought that we’d help others learn something new, but who knew that we could actually learn from each other?!

What's next for Desi Arabs

After creating this website as a group, most of us wanted to add on to it. So, we decided to create more recipes and share it to everyone!!! We will add more middle eastern and desi food to the main menu, and continue with this project.
