Inspiration
We were inspired to make this project because as busy high school students, we often neglect our health. Having a web application where we can know how much water we should be intaking and healthy recipes we can with a simple input of age, weight, and gender, makes the process to a healthier lifestyle less intimidating.
What it does
The user inputs their age, weight, and height. The web application then displays how much water they should intake daily, their BMI, and their body fat percentage. Using Spoonacular API, the web application will also offer meal suggestions. The user can also search for different meals/recipes and upon choosing a meal, will be taken to a separate page where they are provided with details on the recipe such as nutritional value and instructions on how to cook it.
How we built it
We coded it primarily using typescript with HTML and java for input.
Challenges we ran into
We also struggled with developing a clear and feasible plan for our project. We wanted to include many ideas, but we had to prioritize and decide which ones were most important and achievable within the given time frame. Additionally, we encountered difficulties with GitHub, as we were inexperienced in using it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our accomplishments in collaborating on a project and completing a hackathon together.
What we learned
- Learned more about APIs
- How to use GitHub and Git Desktop
- Learned how to make a website on GitHub
What's next for Derpy Dumplings' Project
Given more time, the web application would also be able to give users workout suggestions and have a feature to connect with others as well as professionals to assist them in their health journey.
