Inspiration
Skincare has become increasingly popular, but choosing the right products and combining them correctly can be surprisingly complicated. Different skin types, allergies, budgets, concerns, and active ingredients make it difficult to know what is actually suitable for each person.
We wanted to create a tool that makes dermocosmetics more personalized, accessible, and understandable, helping people make better-informed decisions about their skincare routine.
What it does
Dermily is a mobile app designed to create personalized skincare routines based on each user's:
- Skin type and concerns
- Skincare goals
- Budget
- Allergies and sensitivities
- Existing products
Users complete a short questionnaire, and Dermily generates a personalized skincare routine and recommends suitable products within their budget.
The app also includes a product scanner. Users can take a photo of a cosmetic product, and Dermily analyzes its ingredients to identify potential incompatibilities with products they already use or with their individual needs.
The app can also explain when and how to introduce a new product into the routine and suggest alternative products when necessary.
How we built it
Dermily is currently in the concept and early development stage.
Our approach combines dermocosmetic knowledge, ingredient databases, and AI-powered analysis. The planned system will connect each user's personal profile with information about cosmetic ingredients and products to generate personalized recommendations.
The app will use image recognition to read product labels and identify their ingredients. An intelligent recommendation system will then evaluate these ingredients in the context of the user's existing routine, skin characteristics, allergies, and goals.
The interface is being designed to be simple and intuitive, so users can easily understand not only what products are recommended, but also why they are recommended.
Challenges we ran into
One of our main challenges is ensuring that recommendations are scientifically accurate and safe. Not every combination of cosmetic ingredients represents a contraindication, and factors such as concentration, formulation, frequency of use, and individual sensitivity can influence compatibility.
Another challenge is accurately extracting ingredient information from photographs of product labels, which may vary in quality, language, formatting, or readability.
We also want to avoid overwhelming users with technical information. A key challenge is therefore translating complex dermocosmetic knowledge into clear and practical recommendations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have transformed a common everyday problem into a concrete digital health and beauty concept.
Our main achievement so far has been defining a solution that brings together several aspects that are usually separated: skin assessment, personalized routines, product recommendations, ingredient analysis, and routine compatibility.
We are also proud that Dermily is designed around the user's individual needs rather than generic skincare trends or one-size-fits-all recommendations.
What we learned
Developing Dermily has taught us that personalized skincare involves much more than simply recommending products.
We learned how important it is to consider the interaction between ingredients, the user's characteristics, and the products already present in their routine.
We also learned that combining scientific knowledge with technology requires finding a balance between accuracy, personalization, and usability. A recommendation can be scientifically correct but still not be useful if the user cannot understand it or apply it easily.
What's next for Dermily
Our next step is to transform the concept into a "functional prototype".
We plan to develop the user questionnaire, build the initial cosmetic ingredient database, create the product-scanning system, and develop the recommendation engine.
In the future, we would like Dermily to become a comprehensive personal skincare assistant that continuously adapts to the user's needs, tracks their routine, and helps them make safer and more informed dermocosmetic decisions.
Our ultimate goal is simple: make personalized skincare easier, smarter, and more accessible to everyone.
