Inspiration

What sparked the idea of this project was our personal experience of acne. Acne is a confidence destroyer for people of all ages who suffer from it. Like many people that encounter acne, it was difficult to determine the cause of acne and even more difficult to figure out how to get rid of them given the many types of acne that look similar.

What it does

DermaPal takes an image of your face and identifies the most prominent type of acne that you have. It provides a description of the acne, what causes the acne, and how to treat it. It also lets you know what type of product to use for that type of acne.

How we built it

We built this project using React JS for the front end and Node JS for the backend. Using Clarifai's machine learning API for image recognition, we were able to generate predictions for each acne type.

Challenges we ran into

Since we are both beginners in web development, we took quite some time figuring out how things worked.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is our second hackathon and given the amount of time, we are proud of being able to build something that is meaningful to us.

What we learned

From the first hackathon to the second, we learned how to set realistic goals and manage our time better.

What's next for DermaPal

DermaPal can be used to send reports with patient information to companies like curology where they make custom skincare products tailored to a patient's skin type and mailed to your door. This saves the hassle of finding out which one out of the hundreds of skincare products in the drug store works for you.

I worked on the front-end. My job was to create not only to design the web page, but also create the connection to Clarifai's image recognition API. I created a model on Clarifai and trained the model to detect two types of acne and also no acne. I made backend calls to retrieve the information that correlates which each type of acne. The information includes a description of the acne type, causes, treatments, and also a product recommendation that indicates what ingredient you should be searching for when browsing for skincare products. During our group discussion, we found out that DermaPal would be most useful for people who would like to identify what type of acne they have and what products they should be using without having to go through a chaotic and possibly misleading internet search to find out what they have and what they need. DermaPal can also be partnered with companies like Curology where they make custom tailored skin treatments based on your skin condition. DermaPal can generate a report on each client's skin condition and send it to Curology to create a customized product.

I worked on the backend. My job was to set up a database with mongoDB and response functions that will get information from the database based on the prediction made by the Clarifai API. Also helped with training data for our model.
What is our project about?
We found out that acne was something everyone had in common. During a group conversation we found out that before consulting a dermatologist people usually try to find treatments on the internet. The problem is that most of the time is not accurate. That's when DERMAPAL comes to solve your ski breakout problem. Our goal is to allow the user to create an account and upload picture of the acne. Our webpage would give a prediction based on machine learning, and our code will output products, treatment components, etc.
Do get a better experience, we think that interaction between dermatologists and client could help to their decision to the best treatment
