Inspiration
Calculus can be a real struggle to learn for many people around the world. One of the main concepts in Calculus is derivatives, and with this project, it calculates the derivative of a term using the power rule, which is one of the fundamentals to finding a derivative, meaning it's perfect for calculus beginners. This calculator was inspired by "PhotoMath" where you get an explanation to each solution.
What it does
Finds the derivative of a term given by the user, and gives an explanation to the solution.
How we built it
Built using Java, and Java AWT (Abstract Window Toolkit), which is an API to develop GUI based apps in Java.
Challenges we ran into
Had to research and about Java AWT as I have never been exposed to AWT. Also since it's a predecessor to "Swing," (updated version of AWT built on AWT) it's a bit outdated and harder to create a better GUI app. Also had trouble trying to make the explanation text box line wrap instead of endlessly continuing without going onto the next line. This should be fixed with Java Swing implementation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Furthering my knowledge into Java as well as learning how to create a GUI based application in Java via Java AWT.
What we learned
Learned how the basics of Java AWT work, and how to create an application which requires user input.
What's next for Derivative Power Rule Calculator
Plan to learn about "Swing," which is built off of AWT and is much more advanced, so the program will have more functionality. Additionally, I hope to expand the calculator so it's not just for the power rule, and rather have it expand to the Product Rule, Quotient Rule, and Chain Rule, which are necessary for Calculus.
