Inspiration
Inspired by games like Duskers and Star of Providence.
What it does
It's a top-down bullet-hell dungeon-crawler, where you explore the derelict spacecraft to clear it of threats. Every run is unique, and should offer a fair challenge to any gamer.
How we built it
Built in Unity, Art created in Aseprite, and Sounds from VCV rack.
We started by brainstorming a list of features we wanted to see in the game. Then, we did our best to determine which features would be in-scope and which features wouldn't. After that, we began working on a minimum viable product that would be at least playable. Despite this, feature-creep still go to us, and we had to scrap some designs planned for an MVP.
Challenges we ran into
Learning a new engine was difficult, and we had to create all assets for the new game in a short time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Many of us are very new to game development, and a few of us have never developed a video game before, so we are proud of the progress we made despite skill levels of each team member
One of the big features we kept in-scope was procedurally-generated levels. Thanks to a lot of hard work, we were able to achieve that, making each playthrough unique Procedurally generated dungeons and rooms, every playthrough is completely unique.
What we learned
We all developed our skills in unity, and are much more comfortable with unity development in the future. this was an excellent crash course.
What's next for Derelict Drifter
We would like to polish and finish our original scope.
