Inspiration
I struggled with depression and often felt isolated with no one to talk to or guide me. This project aims to create an AI companion that encourages expression and helps users explore their feelings in a supportive way while guiding them toward helpful resources and positive coping strategies.
What it does
Depression AI is a conversational companion that allows users to talk about how they feel. It responds with empathy, encourages self-expression, and provides general guidance toward seeking professional help and emotional support resources when needed. It is designed to be a safe space for reflection and emotional expression.
How we built it
We built it using conversational AI models and cloud services from Amazon. The frontend provides a chat interface for users, while the backend processes messages and generates responses through AI. The system emphasizes safe, supportive communication and avoids making medical or diagnostic claims.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring that responses remained supportive without crossing boundaries into therapy or diagnosis was a major challenge. We also focused on making the AI conversational yet safe, and designing prompts that encourage expression while guiding users toward professional help when necessary.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We created an AI companion that helps users express their feelings and feel heard. The project demonstrates how technology can support emotional well being in a responsible way. We also built a hackathon ready solution that balances innovation with safety.
What we learned
We learned how important prompt engineering and response boundaries are when building AI systems for sensitive topics. It was also valuable to explore how AI can provide emotional support while respecting ethical and safety guidelines.
What’s next for Depression AI
Future improvements could include richer conversational capabilities, better resource recommendations, and optional features that help users track emotional patterns over time in a privacy conscious way. The goal remains to support emotional expression and help users find the assistance they need.
