Inspiration

Globally, more than 50 million people have dementia, with new cases being registered every 3 seconds. Dementia has emerged as a pandemic in the ageing society and COVID-19 has raised great concerns for people living with the illness. Coping with dementia in the family was hard enough before COVID-19, and with the current situation it has made it harder for families to manage the difficulties. Keeping a routine is important for people with dementia. COVID-19 has turned this upside down. Previous resources, like adult day care, may have shifted online or been shut entirely. That's how our project, DementiaCare was born.

What it does

It helps patients in the early stages of dementia manage their difficulties by providing them with an easy-to-use platform that helps them remember their medications, appointments, and other things that are usually forgotten. We have made an app that combines all these features in one place so the patient has easy access to everything from Notes and Checklists to Calendars and Emergency contacts

How we built it

We used React Native and JavaScript in the front-end and the Django Web Framework and Python for the back-end with MongoDB for the databases. We used REST APIs to communicate between the client and server.

Challenges we ran into

We had some issues receiving and sending the data through requests and sharing data variables across screens. We also had some issues designing the database.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Collaborating really well together!
  • Time zone differences
  • Learning how to use React Native & Django

What we learned

This was our first mobile app project and it was a great learning experience. We learnt how to use React Native and Django together.

What's next for DementiaCare

The next step would be to add more features such as live location tracking allowing relatives of a patient to always have be aware of the patient's whereabouts, providing access to services, tracking missing items, and adding a caregiver portal and role.
