Inspiration

As life expectancy increases globally, we’re witnessing a rapid rise in dementia cases. The emotional toll on families, the stress on caregivers, and the rising healthcare costs inspired us to take action. We were moved by personal stories of memory loss, isolation, and the struggle to maintain dignity in aging. This project was born out of a strong desire to shift the focus from treatment to prevention through education, early lifestyle interventions, and community-based support.

What it does

Our project promotes dementia prevention through three core strategies: Brain Health Education – Workshops, seminars, and online content teaching key risk factors and healthy habits. Community Engagement – Social clubs, memory games, and physical activity programs tailored for the elderly. Digital Access – A simple mobile app offering daily brain exercises, healthy habit reminders, and resources for seniors and caregivers. It aims to delay cognitive decline, empower communities, and reduce the overall burden of dementia.

How we built it

Conducted extensive research on dementia prevention backed by WHO and Alzheimer’s studies. Designed educational materials with health professionals and neurologists. Built partnerships with senior centers, churches, and community health workers. Developed a user-friendly mobile platform with basic features for elderly users, including voice-guided instructions and large-button navigation. Piloted the program in two low-income communities and collected feedback for continuous improvement.

Challenges we ran into

Stigma and Awareness: Many people view dementia as inevitable, making prevention a hard concept to promote. Low Digital Literacy: Some older users struggled with using mobile technology, requiring simplified design and training. Limited Resources: Operating in underserved areas meant budget and manpower were tight, requiring creative, low-cost solutions. Cultural Sensitivity: We had to ensure that content and delivery methods were respectful and relevant to diverse cultural backgrounds.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully reached and engaged over 1,000 seniors in the pilot phase. Developed an inclusive, age-friendly mobile app with over 80% user satisfaction. Built a strong local network of volunteers, caregivers, and educators. Helped reduce social isolation through regular group activities and connections.

What we learned

Prevention works best when started early—brain health habits must begin before symptoms arise. Community matters—seniors thrive when they feel supported, heard, and involved. Simple tech is powerful—with the right design, digital tools can become daily companions for older adults. Ongoing feedback from users is crucial for program success and relevance.

What's next for Dementia prevention

We’re expanding our reach to more communities and planning to: Integrate AI-based personalized brain training into the app. Develop a caregiver training module to support families at home. Launch a multi-language version to serve diverse populations. Seek partnerships with public health agencies for broader policy support. We believe dementia is not inevitable. With the right tools and timely action, we can build a future where people age with memory, dignity, and joy.
