Inspiration

Dementia is a progressive syndrome characterized by the loss of cognitive functions, such as memory, thinking, and reasoning, severe enough to interfere with daily life and independent functioning. It is not a normal part of aging, though it primarily affects older adult. As the condition worsens, individuals often require increasing support for basic activities like eating, dressing, and moving around, and may face physical complications such as difficulty swallowing, incontinence, or increased risk of falls. Caregivers, often family members, provide the majority of this support, facing significant physical and emotional burdens alongside the economic costs associated with long-term care.

While there is currently no cure for most forms of dementia, early diagnosis allows for better management of symptoms and planning for future care. Treatment focuses on supportive care, non-pharmacological interventions, and medications that may temporarily ease specific symptoms.

What it does

A mobile application to help caregiving for the elderly, especially those with symptoms of memory loss like demetia. The features include:

  • Multiple care-participant roles in one app: caregiver and recipient
  • Keep track of routines and no more missed medication, exercise, and other scheduled activities
  • Keep people you care for safe by knowing where they go when the symptoms might occur and might cause them to wander off

How we built it

We built it with React Native, Expo, FastAPI, Supabase, Flyctl, and sparks of excitement.

Challenges we ran into

  • Developing with a varied sets of familiar tech stacks and within short window of development time
  • Choosing the feasible to build libraries with zero cost as MVP

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although not all brainstormed features can be implemented, we're proud of creating our final application that actually address everyday life issues.

What we learned

New tech stacks, new environment where people have the same goal of innovating and building.

What's next for DemensiApp

The have some ideas on future features like Games that challenge memory, note sharing feature, and a voice assistant.
