DemænCare: Supporting Dementia Caregivers ❤️

Globally, over 55 million people live with dementia, projecting to reach 78 million by 2030 and 139 million by 2050. In the U.S. alone, nearly 12 million Americans provide unpaid, yet 24/7 care for a loved one with dementia. This care is valued at over $400 billion annually, but caregivers still lack accessible tools to support their emotional burden, track daily responsibilities, and communicate effectively with healthcare professionals.

What it does

  • A dashboard designed to support dementia patient caregivers in managing daily responsibilities and monitoring patient well-being.
  • A easy to use mobile app for dementia patients.

Key features include:

Dashboard see demo link:

  • AI Chat Window: Allows caregivers to discuss the emotional challenges of 24/7 care and share updates about their patients. The AI then generates a report summarizing key points for doctors.
  • Community Connection: A section that helps caregivers connect with others, share experiences, and receive AI-based recommendations for support and engagement.
  • Wellness Visualization: Displays trends indicating whether the patient’s condition is stable, improving, or declining.
  • Task Management: A to-do list feature for tracking essential caregiving duties such as administering medications, also in calendar view.
  • Multi-Language: The dashboard now supports 3 languages (currently English, Chinese, and Spanish).

mobile app see demo link:

  • Voice-enabled Text: Tap any FAQ to hear it read aloud.
  • Home Navigation: Alert caregiver that their patient is lost, helps the patient find their way home.
  • Emergency Calls: Options to calls caregiver, other emergency contact, or 911. Also alert caregiver if 911 has been called.

How we built it

The dashboard was built using React and TypeScript, the backend runs on Python (Flask) connected to PostgreSQL database for storing information. The patient-facing mobile view was developed using Expo for quick cross-platform testing. Most importantly, we integrated the Gemini API to power AI chat, generate medical-style summaries, and recommend community support resources.

We're proud to overcome the challenges of

  • Connecting the caregiver dashboard with the patient’s mobile view, including syncing, tracking, updating data.
  • Designing (and redesigning multiple times) a UI that is EASY to use for non-technical caregivers, and easy to use for elderly.
  • Building a working AI-augmented caregiving assistant in a short timeframe.
  • Creating a system that could realistically help millions of families.

What we learned

  • How to integrate AI automation into real workflows.
  • The importance of a empathetic design in healthcare tools.
  • That simple interfaces often have the biggest impact on real users.

What's next for DemænCare

  • Expanding to support more languages (currently English, Chinese, and Spanish)
  • Integrating wearable data for more accurate patient monitoring
  • Partnering with clinics and caregiver networks to reach communities in need
