Inspiration
More than 23 million Americans, live in food deserts. Areas that are more than a mile away from a supermarket. Getting healthy food options is already difficult, and the difficulty to track their regular meals with the apps on the market make it tedious. We wanted to simplify this.
What it does
Delish is a food diary where you can easily and quickly customize what you have eaten. We designed this with the customer in mind, where they can input their own unique foods, along with choosing from a list of provided foods, instead of being limited to just what the app has. Many ethnic foods, and family traditions aren't included on other apps, and it becomes a struggle to accurately know what they have eaten. Delish simplifies this by easily letting them add their own meals, and letting them be in control of their diet again. Secondly, we wanted to reduce the time it takes to reduce logging their meals. Often times, it takes over 2 minutes to log what we ate, and this leads to bad habit tracking and going back to their old habits. By easily and quickly adding food to their log and letting the user access it quickly, it makes it easy and quick to track food, leading us all to better eating.
How we built it
Using Android Studio, we developed an app for maximum user friendliness, and created a platform. The input is text from the user, and it is saved to make a highly personalized service to track their eating habits.
Challenges we ran into
Android Studio is new to all of us, and learning how to code and build an app was a difficult task. Creating what we envisioned had many bumps, such as learning the platform, serialization, user input, xml serializer, and this being our first hackathon.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We are proud of getting our app to work mostly, and all the learning that happened! We wanted to push outside of our comfort zone by learning a new way to code and we did learn a lot from trying this out. Collaboration was at its finest and we all got to work together to make something we are proud of.
What we learned
We learned how to independently solve problems, and stay as aligned with the consumer as possible. Learning how to research how to create an app from scratch, and trying to do it as quickly as possible lead to a lot of hard work from our teammates. While many times developing became difficult, we pushed on and wanted to create an app which had potential to help someone at their most fundamental part of life.
What's next for Delish
Delish holds exciting promise for the future. We hope to make eating healthy more accessible for more people by making our app more user friendly. By developing our User Interface, adding autofill by looking at past trends of the consumers, we hope to make delish easier to use for all. Because it's supposed to be like food. Delish and simple.
