Inspiration
Our love for both technology and food inspired us to create Deliciously Augmented: Chinatown. We wanted to use the immersive and interactive nature of AR to help people discover and engage with the diverse and rich culinary culture of London's Chinatown, thereby transforming the way people experience food and culture.
What it does
By pointing their mobile device's camera at various shopfronts, users can see 3D animations of signature dishes and play interactive games related to the food. Each shopfronts 3D scene is inspired by the original region of China and the type of food they serve. The app also provides interesting facts about the history and culture of the dishes, creating an immersive culinary journey.
How we built it
We were using 8th Wall, A-frame libraries, and Blender. In 8th Wall we utilized their image target, vps, character controller and physics utilities, to create an immersive experience of the area of Chinatown.
Challenges we ran into
Real-world locations are way larger than the simple 2D images, which presented problems in the accuracy of the tracking, but limiting the AR to the most visually distinct areas of the shopfront helped us stabilize. Combining many of the 8th Wall possibilities, lead to some interesting interactions, as we had to make sure things like physics and AR portals worked well together.
