Inspiration
What is Food Insecurity?
- Lack of adequate access or ability to provide proper nutrition due to financial struggles, health problems, other impeding issues 10.5% of all households consume poor and limited diets
- Contributes to many chronic diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes Food Insecurity Disporportionatality
- POC are affected by a disproportionately higher risk of hunger
- In 2018, 22.5% of black homes and 18.5% of Latino/Hispanic households experienced food insecurity US Food Waste Each year, 108 billion pounds of food is wasted in the United States
- AKA 130 billion meals and more than $408 billion in food thrown away each year
- Nearly 40% of all food in America is wasted
What it does
DeFridge helps you easily manage buying healthy, ethically sourced food and reducing food waste in a sustainable manner! We offer users a convenient way to organize meal shopping and cooking, prevent food waste and donate excessive groceries to those in need. Combine daily life, nutrition AND social justice all in one app!
How we built it
We used a combination of Bootstrap, HTML, and CSS to build our landing page and SwiftUI to build our app interface.
Challenges we ran into
None of us have had a whole lot of app building experience, so using SwiftUI was a challenge in itself. Additionally, one Mac computer in the team resulted in a experience that made it hard to collaborate. We tried using Google Vision to implement our CamScanner feature as well as Apple AV Kit, but unfortunately we were unable to at the moment due to timing- definitely something we want to implement later though! As first-years, we're really proud of ourselves for experimenting with new technologies/languanges and having a final project that is functional.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Having functional buttons on Swift! While idea is simple, the thought was daunting at 9pm Saturday Night. Thank you to team member Salma for cracking the code!
What we learned
Starting with a framework is extremely important. Without a rough draft design, our coding process would have been a lot harder.
What's next for DeFridge
Initially, DeFridge hopes to be used by environmentally conscious individuals in the Greater Seattle area. Additionally, we hope to finish implementing our "create an account" feature, so that users can connect in a mutual aid network in addition to donating to non-profits. As we move forward and develop more accessible features, we hope to see DeFridge as a trailblazer in the sustainable technology industry across the world, changing the ways people think about food waste.
