Inspiration

As technology advances, more and more tools are offered to students for improving workflow and keeping track of their daily activities. However, as a student, it is oftentimes difficult to know what those tools are and where to find them. That is why we designed DeepEdu as a single hub for all of those needs. Our team was trying to think of a solution to condense important student resources into one website. In addition, the aesthetic of our website was inspired by the whale-themed promotional material for HackRU 2023. This also fits into our core concept of wanting this website to be like the deep ocean, having an expansive library of tools for any student.

What it does

Currently, we have several different capabilities built into our website. We have a flashcard system where a user can create and review their own flashcards. This will be helpful when preparing for exams or studying in general. Next, we have a planner consisting of a calendar and sticky notes to ensure you can always meet your deadlines. We have a notes/diary tab where you can set up a diary-like note system where you can scroll through previous entries that are all sorted by time. Wee have a math tab featuring a non-graphing and a graphing calculator. Finally, we have an additional feature that requires an additional install on our linked GitHub. It is a newspaper analysis tool that can quickly summarize any article online as well as offer a quick sentiment analysis.

How we built it

In our team, we initially split up to brainstorm what is important to us as a student. We then tried to implement those needs into our website. We divided up our ideas and then split out into teams to complete them. Essentially, we each made our own websites via HTML and then figured out a way to combine them together.

Challenges we ran into

We initially made a newspaper analyzer and tried to incorporate it directly into our website. Due to the machine learning and AI elements of the project, Python was the language chosen. However, when it came time to implementing the code into our website, we ran into issues with inserting said code into the website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the fact that we were able to actually finish most of what we had in mind. There were a few last-minute additions that exceeded our initial expectations. With two first-time Hackathon attenders, we considered anything we accomplished something to be proud of.

What we learned

We learned a lot about collaborative website building. Although this time around we took some liberties and shortcuts, it gave us a decent idea of how to implement HTML.

What's next for DeepEdu

I think next time we will try to work with more in-depth front-end tools such as Vue.js. We also had heavy interest in MongoDB and plan to use it for our next project.
