Inspiration
While thinking up sea-related ideas, we stumbled across a video of a sea anemone swimming to escape the clutches of a starfish. Inspired by the sea anemone's strange movements, we decided to base a simple application around it and made this simulation.
What it does
The user can select two sea creatures from a provided list and start a race between the creatures to see which one gets to the end of the screen first.
How we built it
We built the simulation using Java and the Java Swing library.
Challenges we ran into
Swing is a tedious language to use, and was unfamiliar to us, so we needed to do a lot of learning.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are very happy with the graphics and the layout considering our limited knowledge of Swing!
We also solved problems that we were not able to solve in the past, such as changing panels.
What I learned
We learned how to make a better GUI. We also learned a lot about the different animals we put in our simulation.
What's next for Deep Sea Race
We'd love to have more educational simulations included in the application. One thing we thought of while brainstorming was a mantis shrimp punch simulation! We could also include more animals in the race simulation.
