Inspiration
I have always wanted to try game development, and I thought that SwampHacks would be a great place to learn the basics of it. This game is inspired by classic arcade games and uses simple controls and pixel art. The "Exploring the Unknown" theme inspired the concept for the game, since much of the ocean is still unexplored.
What it does
The user plays as a sea diver falling through the ocean. As they fall, they can use the left and right arrow keys to gather coins and earn points. If they hit a sea creature or are hit by an anchor, the game ends.
How we built it
I used Unity game engine and C# scripts to build this game.
Challenges we ran into
I worked on my own this year, so having enough time to learn and develop the project was challenging. Since I was unfamiliar with Unity, I also ran into a few unexpected issues with my game objects that took a long time to figure out and solve. I had to do a lot of reading to resolve these problems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that I was able to finish a playable game, even if it is simple. I am glad that I challenged myself to learn new tools and to make my own pixel art, and I am happy to have completed the hackathon.
What we learned
I learned a lot! I feel a lot more comfortable with Unity now, and I also have a better idea of what game development looks like.
What's next for Deep Sea Diver
I would love to expand on my existing interface to add in sound effects and background music to the game. In the future, I would also like to add more animation and a title screen to help improve the user experience.
