Inspiration
During high school, our involvement in social activism inspired us to tackle sustainability issues. Learning about Hackbeanpot's 2024 theme, "Under the Sea," we decided to create a user-friendly website. The platform lets people of all ages drag and drop virtual waste into trash bins, providing information on each item and how we can reduce waste. Our goal is to make learning about and taking action for the environment accessible and engaging.
What it does
Deep Blue Clean Up is an interactive website application where the user is educated on how much waste is produced each year and how it ends up polluting our oceans.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript API.
Challenges we ran into
Using the Javascript drag-and-drop API was difficult because there were a lot of new events we had to understand. We also had difficulty working with Flexboxes and we wanted to have a blurb show up when we dragged the waste.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were proud of how pretty the UX design came out to be and how the Javascript works as we intended! The drag and drop was one of the hardest parts to implement.
What we learned
We learned about deploying a website on Netlify, Javascript, and a lot of CSS! Attending all the fun workshops like intro to React, ML, and web scraping was very informative and fun!
What's next for Deep Blue Clean Up
We hope to make certain waste bounce back if it is dragged into the wrong waste bin. Also incorporating more interactive aspects like keeping score.
