Inspiration
The deep ocean is one of the least explored environments on Earth, yet most people experience it only through videos and photographs. I wanted to turn that curiosity into an interactive experience where users can actually dive through different ocean zones and discover what exists beneath the surface.
What I built
DEEP is an immersive 3D ocean exploration website that lets users travel from the surface into progressively deeper ocean zones.
Users can:
- Explore different ocean depths through an interactive depth navigator
- Discover marine life associated with different environments
- View information such as depth, temperature, pressure, sunlight, and ecosystem
- Interact with marine-life discoveries
- Explore the underwater environment through a visually immersive 3D interface
The goal was to make learning about the deep ocean feel less like reading a webpage and more like actually diving into it.
How I built it
I designed the experience around a depth-based exploration system, where the environment, marine life, and information displayed to the user change as they move through the ocean.
The project combines a 3D web experience with interactive UI components, depth navigation, marine-life data, and a backend service for the application's functionality.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was making the 3D experience feel immersive while keeping the interface understandable and responsive. I also had to make the depth transitions, interactive elements, and backend deployment work together as one experience.
What's next
I'd like to expand DEEP with more marine species, richer underwater environments, additional ocean zones, and more interactive educational experiences.
