Inspiration

Privacy on the internet often comes with trade-offs between convenience and data retention. We wanted to build a communication platform where conversations are temporary by design, eliminating long-term server-side message storage. Inspired by secure operational communication, DEDSEC Shadow NET focuses on ephemeral tunnels, automatic memory shredding, and anonymous peer-to-peer style communication without requiring user accounts or persistent chat history.

What it does

DEDSEC Shadow NET is a temporary encrypted-style communication platform that creates disposable communication tunnels between two users.

Key features include:

πŸ”’ Anonymous tunnel creation with unique session IDs. ⚑ Real-time messaging over WebSockets. 🧠 RAM-only message storage with no persistent database. ⏱️ Automatic 15-minute tunnel expiration that resets on activity. πŸ—‘οΈ Secure tunnel shredding that clears in-memory chat history and disconnects all participants. πŸ‘₯ Two-user communication limit for private conversations. 🎨 Cyberpunk-inspired terminal interface with immersive shredding animations and system diagnostics.

Instead of permanently storing conversations, every tunnel exists only in server memory and is automatically destroyed after expiration or manual shredding.

How we built it Frontend: React + TypeScript + Vite Backend: Node.js + Express Real-time Communication: WebSockets (ws) Deployment: Google Cloud Styling: Custom CSS with cyberpunk terminal aesthetics Audio: Custom sound effects for immersive system feedback

The backend maintains active tunnels entirely in memory using JavaScript Maps. Every tunnel manages connected participants, live messages, countdown timers, and automatic destruction routines without relying on Firestore or SQL databases for message persistence.

Challenges we ran into Building a reliable in-memory communication system without persistent storage. Managing multiple WebSocket clients while maintaining synchronized tunnel state. Implementing automatic tunnel destruction without interrupting active conversations. Preventing orphaned sessions after unexpected disconnects. Designing a responsive cyberpunk UI while keeping real-time communication smooth. Ensuring temporary conversations are completely removed from server memory after tunnel termination. Accomplishments that we're proud of πŸš€ Built a fully working real-time messaging system. 🧠 Achieved RAM-only message storage with no persistent chat database. ⚑ Implemented automatic tunnel expiration and memory shredding. πŸ”₯ Created a unique cyberpunk command-center inspired interface. πŸ‘₯ Developed anonymous session-based communication without user accounts. πŸ›‘οΈ Designed a privacy-focused architecture that minimizes server-side data retention. 🎯 Built the entire project from concept to deployment. What we learned

This project taught us that privacy is more than encryptionβ€”architecture matters just as much. We explored WebSocket communication, session lifecycle management, temporary data structures, and memory management while designing an application that minimizes persistent data storage. We also learned the importance of accurately representing security features and building systems that prioritize user privacy through thoughtful engineering decisions.

What's next for DEDSEC Shadow NET

Our roadmap includes:

πŸ” True end-to-end encryption using modern cryptographic protocols. πŸ“± Cross-platform desktop and mobile applications. πŸ”‘ Client-side key exchange and secure session management. πŸ“Ž Ephemeral file sharing with automatic destruction. 🌍 Decentralized communication options. πŸ“Ή Secure voice and video tunnels. πŸ›‘οΈ Independent security audit and penetration testing. βš™οΈ Configurable tunnel expiration policies. πŸ“ˆ Performance optimizations for larger deployments. πŸ”’ Additional privacy enhancements while maintaining the platform's zero-persistence philosophy.
