Inspiration
The idea was initially brought up by one of us, a MTG enthusiast and thorough enjoyer of ripping packs in their free time. Once the rest of us commonfolk were exposed to the magical world of random chance and the potential to pull that illusive SUPER RARE CARD, there was no turning back. Combining this passion with an innate desire for competition and destroying friends in our favourite games, we developed CsGacha.
What it does
CsGacha is a competitive, gacha game where players can open a pack every minute, pull some exclusive cards (currently representing questions about CS) and absolutely crush their friends in the thrill of competition. Create a room, invite your friend, pick 8 questions from your gacha pulls and watch as they struggle in vain when your most difficult and SUPER RARE question comes up.
Challenges we ran into
Initially we wanted to create an app that 3d renders a room from a scan and allows you to decorate it, but we found out very quickly that this was way too ambitious.
CsGacha was our backup plan, and something we supposedly knew how to build (hint we did not). In the process of trying to get Elasticsearch to generate questions and determine the correctness of answers (it loved to give everything a 0), to trying to connect the frontend and backend through websockets (failing twice), everyone having work, it was definitely an experience to remember.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud of getting so far, especially with half our team doing this as their first hackathon. Especially on the last day when many of us were busy BUT WE PULLED THROUGH
Shoutout to Yash for the Elasticsearch implementation and Tashvi for designing the pack on the landing page, these are the highlights for sure.
What we learned
Throughout this process, we learned the importance of assigning tasks, as there were many scenarios where two people worked on the same area and got two different implementations.
We also learned to think small first and not be too ambitious, such was the case with out original idea. In the end, some of us really wanted to quit, but we got through it as a team, learned how to code as a team, stayed until the last day working on it as a team, cried as a team, munched on snacks as a team, and ultimately finished as a team.
What's next for CsGacha
GOLD PACK WITH CHANCES FOR EXCLUSIVE RARITIES DROPPING MARCH 1ST oh and maybe we can make the AI a bit better at generating and marking questions we also have some stuff to polish but MORE GACHA
