Inspiration
The inspiration for "Decor Duo Connect" comes from our passion for both interior design and immersive technology. We wanted to create an experience that not only allows people to express their creativity but also fosters collaboration and connection between players in a shared virtual space. With the rise of virtual reality and mixed reality platforms like the Meta Quest, we saw an opportunity to combine these interests and create something truly unique and engaging. "Decor Duo Connect" aims to bring the joy of decorating and designing spaces to a whole new level by enabling real-time multiplayer interaction and exploration in a virtual environment.
What it does
"Decor Duo Connect" is a mixed-reality app for the Meta Quest VR headset that enables two or more players to join together in a shared virtual space. Once connected, players can explore and interact with a 3D model of a house interior simultaneously. They can collaborate in real-time to customize the space by choosing furniture, changing wall colors, arranging decor items, and more. Both players can see each other's actions and communicate as they work together to create their dream interior design. The app provides a social and immersive experience that combines creativity, collaboration, and technology.
How we built it
"Decor Duo Connect" was built using a combination of Unity for development and the Meta Quest SDK for integration with the Meta Quest VR headset. We started by creating the 3D models and assets for the house interior and furniture, ensuring they were optimized for performance in a VR environment. Next, we implemented multiplayer functionality using Photon Fusion's networking capabilities, allowing two or more players to connect and interact in real-time within the virtual space. We utilized the Meta Quest SDK to optimize the app for the headset's hardware specifications and ensure a smooth user experience. Throughout the development process, we iterated on the design, user interface, and gameplay mechanics to create an intuitive and engaging experience for players. Additionally, we conducted testing and optimization to ensure compatibility with the Meta Quest platform and address any performance issues. Overall, "Decor Duo Connect" was built through a combination of creativity, collaboration, and technical expertise to bring our vision to life on the Meta Quest VR headset.
Challenges we ran into
Optimization for VR: One of the main challenges was optimizing the app for performance on the Meta Quest VR headset. We had to carefully manage resources and implement efficient rendering techniques to maintain a smooth frame rate while providing a visually appealing experience.
Real-time Multiplayer Sync: Ensuring seamless synchronization between players in real-time multiplayer was another challenge. We had to address issues such as latency, network synchronization, and maintaining consistency between players' actions to create a cohesive and immersive multiplayer experience.
User Interface Design: Designing a user interface that is intuitive and user-friendly in a VR environment posed its own set of challenges. We had to consider factors such as readability, comfort, and ease of use while designing menus, controls, and interaction mechanisms within the virtual space.
Collaborative Interaction: Facilitating collaborative interaction between players while maintaining a sense of agency for each individual was a complex challenge. We needed to design mechanics that allow both players to contribute to the design process while ensuring that conflicts are resolved smoothly and communication is effective.
Testing and Feedback: Gathering feedback and testing the app with a diverse group of users presented challenges, especially considering the limitations of physical gatherings and the need for VR hardware. We had to find creative ways to conduct remote testing and gather feedback from testers to iterate on the design and address usability issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Real-time Multiplayer Interaction: Successfully implementing real-time multiplayer functionality, allowing two players to join and interact simultaneously in a shared virtual space. This accomplishment enhances the social and collaborative aspects of the experience.
Immersive Environment: Creating a visually stunning and immersive virtual environment for players to explore and interact with. Through careful attention to detail and optimization, we were able to deliver a compelling and realistic experience on the Meta Quest VR headset.
Intuitive User Experience: Designing an intuitive user interface and interaction system that allows players to easily navigate the virtual space, select furniture, and customize the interior design. Our focus on user experience ensures that players can seamlessly engage with the app and unleash their creativity.
Positive Feedback: Receiving positive feedback from users and testers who have experienced "Decor Duo Connect." Their enthusiasm and appreciation for the app validate our efforts and inspire us to continue refining and improving the experience.
Hackathon Submission: Successfully submitting "Decor Duo Connect" to the hackathon and showcasing our creativity, innovation, and technical skills to a wider audience. Participating in the hackathon allowed us to share our project with the community and receive recognition for our accomplishments.
What we learned
Cross-disciplinary Collaboration: We learned the importance of collaboration between developers, designers, and content creators. Working together allowed us to leverage each other's strengths and create a cohesive and polished experience.
Optimization for VR: We gained insights into optimizing performance for VR platforms, including techniques for efficient rendering, resource management, and minimizing latency. This knowledge is essential for creating immersive experiences that run smoothly on hardware-constrained devices like the Meta Quest.
Multiplayer Networking: Developing real-time multiplayer functionality taught us about the complexities of networking and synchronization in a virtual environment. We learned strategies for minimizing network latency, handling player interactions, and ensuring consistency between clients.
User-Centric Design: We deepened our understanding of user-centered design principles, particularly in the context of VR interfaces and interactions. Iterative testing and feedback helped us refine the user experience and prioritize features that enhance usability and immersion.
Adaptability and Problem-solving: Throughout the development process, we encountered unexpected challenges and technical hurdles. We learned to adapt quickly, experiment with different solutions, and persevere until we found effective resolutions.
Community Engagement: Participating in the hackathon and sharing our project with the community taught us the value of networking, collaboration, and receiving feedback from peers. Engaging with others in the industry helped us gain new perspectives and refine our ideas.
What's next for Decor Duo Connect
Expansion of Features: We plan to expand the range of customization options available to players, including additional furniture types, decor items, and design themes. This will provide players with even more creative freedom and inspiration as they collaborate on interior designs.
Enhanced Social Features: We aim to further enhance the social aspects of the experience by introducing features such as voice chat, avatar customization, and the ability to invite friends to join sessions. This will facilitate communication and collaboration between players, fostering a sense of community within the app.
Integration of User-generated Content: We envision incorporating user-generated content functionality, allowing players to create and share their own custom furniture designs, room layouts, and decor creations with the community. This will enrich the content available within the app and encourage creativity and collaboration among players.
Platform Expansion: In addition to the Meta Quest VR headset, we plan to explore opportunities to bring "Decor Duo Connect" to other VR platforms and devices, expanding our reach and allowing more players to experience the immersive world of interior design collaboration.
Continued Iteration and Improvement: We are committed to continuously iterating on and improving "Decor Duo Connect" based on user feedback and emerging technologies. This includes refining the user experience, optimizing performance, and introducing new features to keep the experience fresh and engaging.
