Inspiration

The idea came from a small real-life experience. A friend was telling me about her workplace buddy during her internship, and I got curious about what “buddy” meant in that context. I had to ask someone familiar with the corporate world to understand it. That made me think about how confusing workplace terms and internet slang can be, especially across generations. What if there was a simple way to understand not just the words, but also the vibe behind them?

What it does

Decode the Vibe is an AI-powered tool that explains internet slang, abbreviations, and workplace jargon in simple language. Users can choose an audience, like a grandparent, parent, student, or coworker, and get an explanation, the tone, an audience-friendly version, and a suggested reply.

How we built it

Built Decode the Vibe as a custom web application using React and Vite for the frontend, with Node.js serverless functions on Vercel to handle AI requests. I used Codex to help us build the project step by step by following the five-stage workflow provided by the Devpost hackathon's skill pack, including defining the scope, creating the PRD (Product Requirements Document), preparing the technical specification, building the application, and preparing it for deployment. I focused on making the interface simple, colourful, and easy to use, with audience-specific explanations and suggested replies.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was making the explanations feel natural instead of sounding like dictionary definitions. We also had to make sure the same phrase could be explained differently for different audiences without losing its meaning.

Another challenge was setting up the predefined workflow provided by the Devpost hackathon. I had to understand how to install and invoke the skills in Codex and follow the steps in the right order, from defining the project scope and creating the PRD to preparing the technical specification, building the app, and getting it ready for deployment. Following this structured process helped us turn our idea into a working application step by step.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of turning a simple everyday problem into a working project. I've tried participating in other hackathons before, but I often got stuck somewhere in the process and couldn't finish the project. This time, I was able to take an idea from the planning stage all the way to building and deploying it.

I always found it confusing to know where to start, how to plan the work, and how to reach the final deployment without getting stuck. Following the predefined workflow with Codex helped me approach the process step by step and finally complete something I had wanted to do for a long time. For me, completing this project is just as meaningful as the idea itself.

What we learned

I learned that understanding a phrase is not always just about knowing its definition. Tone, context, and the person you're talking to matter too. I also gained experience building a custom frontend and connecting it to AI through a serverless backend.

What's next for Decode-The-Vibe

I would like to improve the explanations and add more audience options. In the future, I could also add features like voice input, so users can speak a confusing phrase instead of typing it, and screenshot-based slang detection to explain unfamiliar words from chats or social media posts.
