Declutter AI started with a feeling I think many students can relate to: having so much on your mind that you don't even know where to begin.
Between college, projects, expectations, and trying to figure things out, I sometimes found that the hardest part wasn't doing the work. It was making sense of everything in my head first.
I noticed that most productivity tools assume you already know what you need to do. They give you schedules, task lists, and reminders. But what if your thoughts are too tangled to even make a plan?
I wanted to build something that started one step earlier. A space where you could show up with messy thoughts, talk them through, and gradually find some clarity.
That's how Declutter AI began.
What it does
Declutter is an AI-powered thinking companion designed to help people move from mental clutter to clarity.
- Talk with Budd: Express what's on your mind through a natural conversation.
- Clarity Studio: Untangle thoughts, work through difficult decisions, and organize priorities using Untangle, Decide, and Organize.
- Chats: Return to previous conversations when you need them.
- Focus: Give your next step your attention instead of trying to solve everything at once.
The goal isn't to turn every thought into another task. It's to help people understand what's going on and figure out what matters next.
How I built it
I built Declutter AI as a web application, using AI-assisted development to move from an idea to a working product. I focused on creating a calm, minimal interface with a dark charcoal, midnight-indigo, and lavender theme, while building the experience around two central ideas: having somewhere to talk things through and having a way to make sense of those thoughts.
Rather than building another conventional productivity dashboard, I wanted the interaction itself to feel simple and approachable.
Challenges I faced
One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to make an AI-powered product genuinely useful instead of simply generating long responses. When someone is already overwhelmed, giving them even more information can defeat the purpose.
I had to think about how to keep the experience focused, make the outputs actionable, and balance useful features with a minimal interface. Getting from an idea to a working experience also meant making decisions about the product, its interactions, and how everything fits together.
What I learned
Building Declutter taught me that creating an AI product isn't just about connecting a model to an interface. The experience around the AI matters just as much: how someone expresses a problem, how a response is presented, and whether they leave with a clearer understanding than they had before.
It also taught me the value of building something real, testing ideas, and improving the experience through iteration.
What's next
I want to keep refining Talk with Budd and Clarity Studio, improve the quality and usefulness of their responses, and get feedback from real users, especially students who experience the kind of mental overload that inspired this project.
Ultimately, I want Declutter AI to be a place where people can start without having everything figured out.
Because sometimes, you don't need another productivity system. You just need a little clarity to find your next step.
