Inspiration
We decided to do something new to all of us and make an Android Application. The idea behind the app is to allow friends in a group to multiplayer games together without needing any game equipment. No longer will a group of friends be bored without anything to do.
What it does
It currently allows two players to play a game of UNO via BlueTooth connection. No Internet is necessary. The application currently runs on Android devices.
How we built it
We used AndroidStudio, which in itself used Gradle to build and run the project. AndroidStudio was our IDE and Android Device Emulator.
Challenges we ran into
Both application development and using BlueTooth were completely new to all team members so we did all have to learn how to implement these features that were the foundation of the project. However, thanks to the combined power of StackOverflow, Lynda and RedBull we managed to teach ourselves how to build a functioning Android app within 24 hours.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The whole project as a whole really, considering it was a really ambitious project to take on. Mostly getting the BlueTooth to work and the GUI and Implementation to run together were the topmost achievements.
What we learned
We learnt how to build Android applications from scratch, as well as a bunch of theory on how BlueTooth connections actually work. We did also learn quite a bit of javascript and 90s culture for the project's website.
What's next for DeckDragons
We will extend the game to allow more players and a wider variety of games. The goal is to have a large range of games to cure all kinds of boredom. We wish to incorporate more players because currently, the technology offers us the opportunity to expand and learn, so expand and learn is what we shall do.
