Inspiration
Decision MakeHERs is a resource hub encouraging women's leadership, political participation, and civic engagement while celebrating the history of women's suffrage.
Globally, women face barriers to leadership and representation. Challenges include gender norms, discriminatory attitudes, and biased political structures. Women are underrepresented worldwide and the fight to achieve gender parity in political decision making is far from finished. This is an issue of human rights, social justice, and opportunity access.
Features
Our website has 4 pages: Learn, Explore, Inspire, and Inform. Across the project, we wanted to present content in a fun, engaging, and empowering way.
Learn
- Provides an overview of the topic and highlights the importance of gender diverse leadership and women's involvement in politics.
- There is also a quiz where visitors can test what they know about women's suffrage in the United States.
Explore
- This page is all about the data!
- Visitors can read key statistics and engage with interactive charts (made using the Highcharts charting library) about women's political participation.
Inspire
- Introduces visitors to famous suffragists with interactive flip cards. (All of our bios pass the Finkbeiner test - a checklist to avoid gender bias when writing profiles about women.)
- By clicking the "inspire me" button, visitors can browse through quotes from influential women.
- At the bottom of the page we have collected "groups doing good" - resources for visitors to check out if they want to learn more or get involved.
Inform
- On this page we have included a personalized message generator for visitors to write short reminders for their friends or family members encouraging them to vote, nudging them with an issue that matters to them.
- We also provided reasons to vote and a link for visitors from the United States to register to vote.
Throughout the pages, we displayed information in unique ways (cool shapes, revolving text, "typewriter" text, etc.) to make our message memorable, clear, and loud. Additionally, our website is responsive to different screen sizes and all images have meaningful alternative text. Our body font is Inclusive Sans, a typeface designed for accessibility and readability.
Impact
When women have a voice at all levels of decision making, everyone benefits. Women's involvement in politics advances gender equality and allows for effective governance, fulfillment of fundamental human rights, and powerful role models for the next generation. Our website is a toolkit inspiring women to get involved, make a difference, and share their voice by connecting them to history and resources.
