Inspiration

I've been struggling for a while to get into the tech space, despite having been computer programming since I was 12. I currently work fulltime at a call center while I wait to get into college, and was looking for something to get me back into programming. This led me to reach out to people who suggested I look into some Hackathons. Looking into hackathons brought me here, and brought me to the "Can't Be Evil 3" hackathon by Blockstack.

What it does

This is a Decentralized Video Streaming Service with full CRUD functionality.

How I built it

JavaScript, React, Blockstack Libraries, Streamable API, and a whole lot of coffee

Challenges I ran into

Really my only challenge was figuring out the Gaia storage system. Eventually I discovered it didn't work exactly as I thought and that it did not support video streaming. So I turned to the Streamable API. In so doing, I believe this violates the rules of the Can't Be Evil 3 hackathon, as streamable videos can only be deleted upon request or after 3 months of inactivity. This was a good temporary fix but I continued looking for something else.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

This is one of the more unique projects that I've worked on. I've been interested in decentralization and the blockchain for a while, but this is the first project I've worked on which actually uses this technology.

What I learned

I've learned a lot in this project, and most of it isn't even related to the project itself, but rather the space surrounding blockchain technology. I've learned that Andreas Antonopoulos is a great teacher.

What's next for Decentra Tube

Decentra Tube isn't even close to being finished. I want to take this as far as it goes, however far that may be.

Updates

posted an update —

This project is taking me longer than expected, but I have finally finished working on the upload functionality, so now users can create, view, and delete videos. Most of my focus over the next few days will be on styling the website.
